The item placed into her mouth immediately after her death is a black pearl, thought to prevent the body from decomposition. When her tomb was raided during the Cultural Revolution in the 60s, her sarcophagus was opened and the black pearl removed from her skeletal remains as it was one of the most valuable things she was buried with. It has never been found.

I love how they made this scene look old and dusty. Everything back then wasn’t as clean and bright as they make it seem in the modern novels. The scene matched the empress perfectly. 👏

0:06- Overall I like this dramatization but one of its worst flaws is its linguistic inconsistency. From this point of these three condemned women beggars asking for alms to the end of the movie when a Cultural Revolution crowd screams slogans, when the performers aren't directly speaking to Pu-Yi or his caregivers, they speak/sing/chant in Chinese- yet when directly speaking to Pu-Yi and those connected to him, they speak English! I know that in RL they spoke in Chinese but they had the main characters speaking in English for the (largely) English-speaking audience's sake. However, IMO, it would have been better to have either had ALL characters in the movie constantly speak/chant/sing in English or in Chinese with English subtitles- regardless of whether or not their were speaking directly to Pu-Yi or the main characters.

This movie is stunning but the real clincher for me was the phenomenal music, by Ryuichi Sakamoto and David Byrne. I bought the soundtrack in 1987 when I first heard it and still listen to it today, 2024, as it still creates a wave of emotions when I hear it.

The rules of decorum in the palace were super strict. It's kinda funny watching him run around and be like any other preschooler when the most powerful woman in the empire is sitting before him, everyone cowering or looking up to her

Buddhist monks are real parasites. While catholic christian monks roded forests, dried moors, made settlements, had schools for free, copied old books, made wine and beer... those guys just took food and money for nothing. In Tibed they had a horror regime with torture and executions til the Chinese ended that.

chinese medicine and remedies focus on literals. If you ate sheep testicles, youll become fertile and be able to impregnate women, if you ate a turtle soup, who live for a hundred years, surviving being boiled, youll live longer. so yes, it was boiled alive, sucks i know, but i dont think the most powerful people in a country living in a giant lavish palace which was actually a city built specifically for the emperor, would care about… a turtle

The real empress was an evil woman who killed the previous emperor so she would not lose her power. In the end, none of the power was real and lives on only in film.
About Emperor Xuantong (Puyi), I recommend reading the book, "The Last Emperor of China: Autobiography of Puyi", written by the Emperor himself. About this feared, cruel and fascinating character that was Empress Cixi, I recommend reading: The Dowager Empress Cixi: "The concubine who launched Modern China"; "The Iron Empress - The concubine who created modern China"; "Empress - The Story of the Last Woman to Rule China"; Empress Orchid". We hope that there will soon be the production of a mega historical-biographical film production about this character who has been demystified and considered as the cornerstone for the construction of Modern China.

For all the commentators , here are few facts that are often overlooked about Dowager Empress Cixi : (1) She managed to rule over a Weakened Imperial China for decades because she was politically savvy. (2) It was a time of reform & change however many Chinese of that era refused to even listen to change. (3) Sure some martial arts skill can make you highly skilled however an army trained with new technology guns would overcome such mighty warriors. 1860 defeat of China & Burning of YuanMingYuan by UK & France should not be forgotten. (4) The Chinese Imperial Navy was in far begotten state . It was at least a century behind in 1860 . (5) Her own son died because of contracting STD , she blamed the Empress & other concubines for it . She promptly choose a new heir who would be healthy otherwise unnecessary gossip would have eroded Imperial support . (6) Hundred Days Reform began fine however the conservative faction , moderate faction , imperial faction & nationalist factions were displeased that they would have to give up their identity too fast & too quickly. If she hadn't deposed the penultimate Emperor, he would have been deposed by others & even her life would be in jeopardy. (7) Being conservative , learning & knowing that rest of European Imperial powers wanted to take over China , she elected a child so that (a) Each individual faction whether from China or Europe would compete with each other to increase their influence. (b) It would become impossible for any 1 Chinese faction or European power to become dominant in new Emperor's court. (c) Thus the New Emperor would get a broad education & give few decades of peace to China after her death . It was a Brilliant move worthy of Zhuge Liange , to ensure that Chinese people could only decide their own fate if they United with common idea . She may have hoped that in case of revolution, Ai-san-guro(Qing Royal Family line) would continue in peace without any bloodshed like French & British Royal family revolutions . She (Cixi) was a leader that China required. Do remember that what we desire may be different from our actual wants & actual need eg A poor person may desire a buffet food however what he wants is just enough food for 2 times in day , what he needs is a steady honest source of income from work to fulfill it . What he requires is someone to teach him skills or give him a referral to low level job opening!

And to make this movie in the 90’s in communist China, lot of great work went into it. It’s still a great watch, and a good movie for people who wonder what happens to the royals after a dynasty falls. They picked a great person to play Cixi. By the end of her life I’m sure everyone was intimidated, so an intimidating actor is a good fit.
