Thank you. A really well considered book review. I’m a great fan of John Blockley. His gallery was close to my parents house and I bought one of JG’s (limited edition) paintings. It hangs in my dining room above a painting by his daughter, Ann.

Ooh i use the same pallet. I have been using ultramarine blue and need to find a lighter bright blue for skies, so this vid was quite helpful!

I might look into this. Normally, I use those wooden rods made to keep plants erect. I sharpen the ends off. Something you said about the ruling pen is it sounds like it delivers a thin mark upon applying it to paper. What I use doesn't always do this and I get a bit of "blobbage" with that first stroke. Thanks for sharing this with us!

Thanks for this very helpful demonstration! I just got a tube today and anxious to use it this evening. Semi-amazingly, I've been learning to paint with watercolor for a year now, reading many self-help books, watching videos and even taking a class twice a week, and I've not heard of neutral tint until some four days ago! Happy to subscribe! 🎨

PB15 is actually Daniel Smith’s Manganese Blue Hue. It’s related to all the Phthalo blue pigments like PB15:1, PB15:3 and PB15:6 but the pigment particles are much larger in PB15 which is why, (unlike the phthalos) it granulates and doesn’t stain, lifting from the paper much easier. The pigment is made from the same stuff tho.

After ruining a few brushes with the masking fluid and failing with the nib ( Erik Lundgren method) I am now using a bamboo stick and it works pretty well and cleans easily. Your little gadget looks very useful and I might have to treat myself in spite of a moratorium on new supplies!!!!

I guess I am concerned about framing size since the stretched paper loses about an inch and a half from a quarter sheet of paper after removing from stretcher. I like the concept and have been wanting to learn more about these stretchers. Thanks Vinita.
@vinitapappas2 жыл бұрын
Yes, losing that much margin is not ideal and does make the framing size smaller. The payoff is that it's a simple and fool-proof way to stretch paper. I'll give an update after I use the board for a while.

Vinita, thank you so much for sharing this, it's a beautiful example of allowing your "study" to become your reference. You were able to retain the freshness of the study while developing the piece into a beautiful painting, so nice.

I agree with everything you say in your own "critique." I especially like the mountains and how the land merges with them in your plein air painting. Love the colors in both paintings, especially the studio piece. Such a winning combo of colors! Simply outstanding work!

What size is the gatorbord that attaches to the tripod? Thanks for this video. I have been researching for over 9 months. Your setup is the most satisfactory one I have found for creating a lightweight reasonably priced Plein air easel!
@vinitapappas2 жыл бұрын
Hi Elizabeth, The tray I use is about 17" wide by 12" deep. And I have a smaller version that fits into a backpack which I think is about 10" x 12". The holes on my easel butler are 7.5" apart so any board wider than that will work for a tray. The boards I use to hold the paper range in size but I mostly use a board that will hold a 1/4 sheet of watercolor paper. Around 13"x17" will allow for room to tape an 11"x15" piece of paper. The nice thing about this set-up is that you can customize the tray size and the board size to suit your needs. You could test out the tray size using a piece of cardboard first and then cut the gatorboard to size.

Hi Vinita, thanks so much for your video. Phthalo blue (green shade) was my favorite blue in my oil paintings. But when I switched to watercolor about 5 years ago (when I lived in apartments that I was afraid to damage with oil paints), I found watercolor phthalo blue to be way too strong. I had trouble cleaning it off my plastic pallets and I struggled with it on paper. Now I use Prussian Blue instead for a cool blue. I also use Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue (as a mid range blue), and Ultramarine Blue as a warm blue.
