My midi keyboard is working fine when it comes to the buttons and knobs I have set up to turn on different audio effects for my instruments and vocals, but the keys aren't playing any sound. They are armed and everything, but there's still no sound being played. I really don't know what's going on, I've restarted ableton six times and there's been no fix.
@JonValtandtheEvilRobots2 ай бұрын
Knobs and buttons that are MIDI Mapped communicate via the "Sync" checkbox in Live's MIDI settings. If you're wanting to record, play notes, etc., make sure you have "Track" checked under the "In" section (It'll likely be called [Your_Keyboard_Midi_OUT] - something similar to that.) Enable MIDI In Track checkbox. Do you see that little yellow dots I describe? Do you have a VST loaded?

Hey Jon. This video is very helpful. I, however, have another problem that relates to the reproduction of recorded material. I have a piano connected to my laptop over a MIDI cable without an audio interface. Ableton 11 Live receives the signal from the piano perfectly and I already made something recorded. However, when I try to play it so I can hear how it sounds like, the sound is not being reproduced. Any suggestions how the problem can be solved?
@JonValtandtheEvilRobots3 ай бұрын
@@nikolalajic-tk6cn sounds like you can successfully record MIDI, correct? You are seeing notes show up on your piano roll in Ableton Live when you record? If so, you’re doing everything right. Let me ask a couple important questions that will help me help you with the next step… while you are playing on the piano to record it into the computer, where is sound coming from? Does your keyboard have its own speakers? And after recording when you want to listen back, where do you WANT sound to come from? Do you want your keyboard to play by itself through its own speakers, or do you want a computer instrument to play what you’ve just recorded?

I have a weird problem. Maybe you could help me. Whenever I plug in my Akai mpk25 midi controller and arm a midi track, the track volume just drops all the way down to its lowest value. When I readjust it, it happens again after I have used for a few moments. I have tried resetting to factory settings but it didn't help. I have tried it with an arturia analog lab and the same thing happened but with the track panning. What could this be?
@JonValtandtheEvilRobots3 ай бұрын
Sounds like one of the buttons / controllers on the mpk25 is controlling Live. Look under the Control Surfaces section of the settings (under LINK TEMPO MIDI) and remove it for now. See is that helps. Totally sounds like you're touching an encoder (knob) while you're playing and it's sending the value to Ableton Live, hence the action happening "after awhile." Look at your mpk25 software and see if any knobs or buttons are using MIDI CC 7, 8, 10, or 11. Those will affect volume, pan, etc. If removing it as a control surface doesn't work, and none use the CC above, then we'll have to figure out something different.
@simonmay27763 ай бұрын
@@JonValtandtheEvilRobots Yes, that is what I did. I removed the Akai from the chooser control surface and set it to none and that seems to help. Weird. In what way will leaving the control surface chooser set to none affect my recording/playing on the Akai?? Thank you for helping me!
@JonValtandtheEvilRobots3 ай бұрын
@@simonmay2776 not at all. It will only affect your ability to control the program, like say moving the cursor between tracks, volume control etc. (these can me MIDI mapped without using the control surface setting) Under MIDI settings, enable these as you need: INPUT TRACK - if you want to record (“track”) into Live from MPC SYNC - if you want MPC to control things like tempo, starting and stopping, etc. REMOTE - allows you to midi map your knobs and stuff to just about anything inside Ableton live. Take a peep at my videos lol I have stuff midi mapped like you wouldn’t believe.

Hi. Well, you showed us what you did, but didn't really talk to it. Are you implying that in order to get sound out of Ableton, on a Midi track, you must add a wavetable instrument to it? I just loaded Ableton Live Lite 12, no audio interface, just simply trying to play something on a Win 11 PC, Realtek speakers, set up the interface per all the vids on here, and nothing plays. I can hear the metronome, and the midi clip samples, for say, the pad, or piano, but once assigned to a track, no sound. Odd, that if someone is gonna try Ableton, how difficult it is to simply load it up, and try an instrument on your PC speakers - nerveracking!
@prtzl8lgc4604 ай бұрын
Btw, before you got sound on that Midi channel, your Monitor-Midi-To was set to "No output". Once you dropped the wavetable - it went to Audio-To: Master. So, why couldn't you simply do that first? (without adding an instrument-wavetable...
@JonValtandtheEvilRobots4 ай бұрын
@@prtzl8lgc460 Ableton Live typically automatically arms a track when you drag a VST into it. This only happens automatically one time. If you drop VST 1 into Track 1, it *should* arm by itself. Then if you drop VST 2 into Track 2, it should arm Track 2. You will then be “nervewracked” because you hadn’t yet learned about the Arm button (and Exclusive Arm) because you’d find that your VST 1 instrument is “suddenly” silent, and the only way you know how to make an instrument play is by dragging and dropping. Haha THAT is why I showed you in the video. :)

@@prtzl8lgc460 look into getting an ASIO driver (such as ASIO4ALL). It’s Microsoft Windows that is difficult with sound, not Ableton Live. :) Get to know if a little better and you’ll see. 😄 You need ASIO. Using MMX -> Realtek Speakers is gonna be weird. What you’re describing - hearing metronome as well as previews, means you’re properly receiving “Cue” audio. Awesome! Everything is working! Once you’ve assigned to a track - nothing… yep! I got the answer! That’s cuz your “main” (not cue) output is not set to your main speakers. Look down in the bottom right corner area for what looks like two volume faders. One has headphones next to it. Top drop down is Cue output and bottom drop-down is Main output. As you get better with Ableton Live you’ll find this very useful! Because you’d send cue output to your headphones and main output to Speakers. That way, as you’ve already found out, you can sample midi clips, play previews, etc., without the audience hearing it. 🔥🔥🔥🔥

@@JonValtandtheEvilRobots Yup, I have ASIO4ALL, I choose Driver: ASIO. Audio device: ASIO4ALL V2. Now, this is where confusion sets in. All help videos indicate to choose your own audio hardware. I have tried that - Realtek ASIO - was the option given. I have also made the sampling rate for Ableton the same as computer, at 48K. So, I can choose a pad, and load it to a track, and hit space bar - nothing, no audio. I have tried all options of the output (1, 2, 1/2), to no avail. It has degraded to not even playing the metronome anymore. This can't be this hard, can it? I'm thinking there are 4 million musicians out there with a PC, just wanting to try this software....

Go to your Settings - Audio - and choose your audio interface as the output. If you are playing an instrument and seeing the green bars showing that audio *should* be coming out, then it is definitely your audio settings. If no output bars show up, it's more likely the instrument isn't producing sound at all, because either your midi device isn't properly controlling it or a myriad of other reasons. Feel free to try it and ask a follow-up question - I like helping people figure it out.
