My grandfather had a 1958 10 hp Johnson that got used every year both fresh and salt water. In 1988 it was still in use, looked brand new and ran as good as the day he bought it. We never had much money so we saved, bought the best we could and took great care of what we had. Amazing what happens when you take care of stuff.

Richard cant beat the old 50S Evinrude & Johnsons 1958 was a banner year for both names being built by OMC.They were made so well for the most part and anybody could afford one in those days even a kid with a paper route. Different times now ridiculous prices especially the big ones crazy technology & way overpriced . I bet that 10 was a beaut.... thanks for sharing that story... TOT62

Bow fishing at night we saw a Evinrude 70hp motor with a broken transom still bolted to it. I dried it out and lubed it up. It started and ran! I use it on my boat today. I had to clean carbs and replaced reed valves. New impeller for the water pump. I replaced piston rings also. It runs great!

Gotta love that rod bolt! The rods were probably toast anyway from the botched previous attack on the powerhead. OK, this one does have the crummy lower seal I mentioned in place of the carbon seal, OMC returned to the carbon seal again in 1957. These seals rusted and failed, many powerheads were slowly destroyed from water ingestion through the damaged lower seal. Are you using the Yamaha paint?? Wonder what was up with the doubled up fuel pump bypass covers, glad you returned them to original.

I guess it did run with all these screwy things at one time.Crushed in lineup centerpins for the two main bearings, rod bolt hex head, bypass covers wrong, waterpump nuts and bolts, even the cotton clothesline pull cord,LOL! You did a great job on the outboard. Good that you are in the United States as you can get most parts at a good price. Not so great for parts and cost here in Canada. In addition, there is a great deal of accomplishment on fixing those older motors as well for sure.

I learned a long time ago that people don't take care of things ESPECIALLY BOATS AND BOAT MOTORS. And, it amazes me how they will spend thousands of dollars to buy them and then abuse them by being lazy and irresponsible. I love it when rich people throw stuff away!!!

Rusty, crusty, mouse piss infested.... A normal day for you. You skipped over powerhead disassembly and went right to painting the block... Crank and good? Some of these 1956 models had a cheesy lower powerhead seal install of the traditional carbon seal setup which killed many powerheads slowly. The carbon seals came back in 1957. The 15s were nice running engines though and had smaller bores than the 18s, so less prone to sleeve separation. This SOB looks like a real fighter though, just wants to be "left alone to die completely".

The old dog was sure a fighter...I hear ya, gotta just walk away sometimes. I dunno, raising that water level might have solved your pumping issue. I'm no fan of the chinese stuff for sure, but maybe it just couldn't get primed. And yeah, once the flywheel key gets sheared, tends to mess up the keyway and gall the crank tapers. I usually remove the key and lap the surfaces with some light compound. But, once the flywheel tapers have spread, you are done. Many guys over torque the damn things with the zip gun and end up with this issue. Your years at eastern served you well sir. Oh, the stories you could tell I'm sure.... OMC would still be in business today if that exact engine could still be produced. I would put one of these up against any four stroke for smoothness and idle quality. Idle quality went out the window in the early 70s on these engines when the plugged the overboard drains and added the crazy recirc system...

This motor was tricky but its a done deal now.Yeah Im in the process of buying a test tank( 275 gallon IBC caged container) so no more backyard testing in small totes and pails,LOL. I did have the fill level at more then one time while it was running up to the bottom of the bell cup mount castings still no pumping.Put the new one in and it pumped again even at lower levels.Yeah I worked for Eastern for 8 years they went out of buisness in 1990 was a great job paid pretty good for the time. Im still amazed on what OMC made in the 50-60s how well everything was made and designed in most cases..nothing good last forever as we all know....

@@OutBoardTink62 Those were the good days at OMC, and Eastern. I've currently got a 10hp that is giving me fits. Replaced the impeller took it for a water test, pumped great. The next time I used it wouldn't pump a drop, and I used an OEM impeller. Perhaps the little bleed hole in the housing was plugged, although it didn't look like it when I pulled it apart. I did find it had the wrong water tube, but that was causing the water tube to rub on the shift rod, so really don't think that would cause the issue either. Gotta get that SOB back in the tank to see if it pumps again.
