Movie theaters ARE actually open on Christmas Day. My brother took me to see TITANIC in 1997 on Christmas Day. That was his gift to me. (Yes, I see the irony that Kate was in Titanic.)

This movie is one of may main go-tos when I need cheering up. There are inconsistencies, as always in stories. I recently saw someone showing a book about film editing, where scenographic consistency came at number 6 in priority, compared to emotional consistency as #1.) It is hard to have total continuity in a complex story. I've written a 400 page novel and am currently working on the sequel. Just to set up all lose threads from the first book is a massive endeavour. I've also written theater scripts and know how much one may count on the spectators to fill in the blanks, creating their own rationalisations for oddities. As long as one is fine with one's own rationalisations, one may believe just about anything (which the current socio-political wasteland seems to prove). Here's my rationalisations to your Things. 1) The phones: conscientious father has one phone for each daughter, given to whom ever is babysitting so he doesn't have to juggle phone numbers to several people. If the kids are separated they still have their own piece. A foolproof setup, especially when he is inordinately drunk and needs to be contacted. 2) Didn't notice, but the range of color of light bulbs are quite broad, which would explain the warmer tone of complexion in the night scenes compared to daylight. 3) Didn't think of it in that way (slightly blushing). Maybe it's got more to do with personal experiences than anything else? I've encountered some pretty strange things in RL myself. This scene gets 3 or 4 points of strangeness on a scale of 10. 4) One would assume Graham had gotten his own key by now. Or Iris usually leaves the door open when she knows he may be inbound. 5) About Graham switching from aloof to interested, I think we do hear a few comments that could carry that sub-story. He does say he is compartmentalising. He does his one night stands just because he knows that he will easily engage in people. He does not forget to contact women afterwards, he chooses not to. I must say I've been moving in milieus where there were guys like this, and as long as they behaved the same to all girls, it was like everybody knew and he kind of turned into everybody's potential property, like time-sharing. Kind of. It was at uni... 6) I didn't get the impression Amanda was necessarily going home, but just away from the situation in England. An amped up american in outback rural England. Culture shock. She didn't know how to handle tranquility. Impulsive reaction. Let Graham deal with the dog? She had a ticket to LA and could go anywhere but home from there. (Or let Iris stay anyway. Amanda's house would surely swallow a guest without second thoughts.) 7+8) On this you are totally correct, both on the care side of it and the leadtime for the arrangement. This inconsistency is itching me too. But they did have a little more than two days IIRC. We will have to assume that they had plans to strongarm Arthur into it, or go on having the gala anyway because people wanted to manifest something to his memory. Maybe two days is enoug to gather 1000 people for an occasion like this? Anyway, I took care of my old dad, and now my mother. But I also know how fast things can change if something positive happens for a person on a sliding slope downwards. I did some balance training with my 86 year old mum this summer. We noticed a notable recovery even after the first 15 minutes. And I'm no therapist. I trained jiu-jitsu in my teens, which proved to be sufficient. I think the mere idea that aging isn't predestined, or that the sheer support from someone else may play into it. 9) Plot twist to give Iris the push she needs to finally maker her decision to reject him? She needed that level of eerieness to act on her inner knowing? 10) Details, details. Never let reality inflict on a good story. :) Maybe she found a last minute seat. 11) No such general limitations on Christmas Day where I live. 12) Makes total sense to me. He wasn't happy leaving Iris. It was more like something he felt he had to do, to get closure or clarity. Hearing his former girlfriend playing the victim, he realised he had been used by her, and realised he had had a much sweeter time with Iris. This never stood out to me as peculiar. 13) Or the limo driver (it wasn't a London taxi anyway) realised he could make a roundtrip from the other direction to get her the second time? Neither was he involved in the first day's flight to the airport and back, was he? We don't see it anyway IIRC. Maybe Amanda called for pickup and told the company off on their bad service, which would be in line for her character, so he now knows how to drive there, and there were a scene for that, but at editing they thought this only disturbed the flow of the storytelling. 14) I just viewed a video about the making of The Holiday. It was noted that it is a story from the viewpoints of the two women. They meet the men they need in order to learn something about themselves. (Iris realise she is the leading lady of her own life, and Amanda can start crying again. Healing happens.) The men are side-kicks. It is about women growing into themselves, I guess. There is only so much one may cover in just over two hours.

Thanks for such a thorough, well thought out comment. You make some good points and I agree, the men are just side kicks - though sometimes they steal the show and you want more of them (cough cough - Jude Law). The fact that we still enjoy chatting about this film so many years later is a testament to how impactful it is :)

I had assumed that his daughters were calling from the grandparents phone which is why the number comes up He clearly like Iris lives in the country so a cow in the back garden, probably a field, is not such a big deal. His skin colour probably has more to do with the lighting set in each scene, warm and romantic in the close up with Cameron and less so in the pub bar. I think "kissing strangers all the time" is what we in the UK would call being ironic.

@@murraylaidlaw Different names come up on the caller id (Sophie the first time, and the second time, Olivia). There's a BTS video of Jude law talking about the discrepancy with his complexion being due to filming in both places. I think they also allude in the beginning that he meets women and hooks up on the regular with that opening scene of him in the bar.

All these are valid. The only one I have a suggestion for is at one point Graham says he has the girls for new years, suggesting he shares custody with someone probably the grandparents on the mother's side. That might go some way to explain the phones so they can ring him whenever they want? The taxi thing totally happens in the UK :(

I don’t want to buy a Philips bridge either. Does an echo dot 5 control a hue bulb away from home? Perhaps I should test it out of Bluetooth range using data on my phones’ Alexa app..edit…wow the philips hue app fails to connect in my house out of range of blutooth…say outside or in a far corner away from the light. So i hooked my my Echo Dot near my router and Alexa was able control the light and dimmer. No expensive Bridge needed !
