Pretty sure this is just the ac turning on as necessary and not a problem. Otherwise, if that disc (the compressor clutch) you see isn't moving when the AC is turned on, you'd need to adjust the gap by removing the shims

Is this necessary? Most people just force the piston back in
@bucko15084 жыл бұрын
Forcing a piston in, is the reason this happens. If you force it, and it goes in crooked you more than likely damaged the walls of the caliper and then have to do this.
@timhelland5185 Жыл бұрын
Correct forcing the piston in "can damage both components" More than likely due to corrosion between the two components, being dirty/ rusty , And possible misalignment between the piston and caliper. then you could be forced to possibly either spend more time with the honing process or buy a whole new caliper outright but the fact of the matter of is if you have to hone the caliper once you're done the piston should drop right in with no resistance a brake caliper piston should move in and out with no resistance due to the fine tolerance between the two components, pull a brand new brake caliper out of the box hook it up and mess with it compared to a rusty/seized caliper that you're about to replace then you will understand

FYI I replaced the AC compressor today on my 2014 Forester XT and got rid of the noise AND the engine hesitation I experienced. I did all of the following beforehand to avoid replacing the compressor: added PAG lubrication oil, checked for proper freon levels on manifold gauge set, adjusted clutch gap by removing shims, replaced the whole clutch and pulley assembly - all to no avail to get rid of the noise and hesistation. This is an internal AC compressor problem.. and it was definitely on it's way out even though it was blowing cold (I recommend replacing now early if anyone notices the same issue) . At first I figured I could live with the noise since it still blew cold, but it causing engine hesitation I could NOT live with that - which was easily reproduced only when AC is turned on. Glad my car is normal again and running awesome, bone stock! @ 158k miles
@buckets_of_chai4 жыл бұрын
Can you explain where and why you added PAG? Did you do the compressor replacement yourself?

Good video I own a 2011 Subaru Forester and My ac is not working right now, but the compressor starts when I turn the ac on. Two days ago I noticed that my compressor was leaking oil and it has just started to make that sound. Would you say it is the o rings that are worn out? Does anyone know? Thank you
@JeremiahMuchangi4 жыл бұрын
Same issue here on 2011. I noticed oil spots on the hose joint and compressor. Did you resolve yours? Thinking of replacing the o rings and refilling plus oil.
@rcericon7104 жыл бұрын
Jeremiah Muchangi I had a hose that leaked antifreeze right under the AC compressor. It was an easy and inexpensive fix. I removed the compressor to get that hose exposed and replaced. I also changed the O rings from two lines on top of my ac compressor just in case. Then, I refilled the AC from my lower ac pressure line. I have cold air ruing again!!!! 😃

Mine had similar noise but otherwise, aircon was cold. The car aircon workshop which I went to just lubricated the compressor and replaced o-ring and the noise was fixed. Cause was o-ring no longer effective causing lubricant and some refrigerant gas to escape at the joint where refrigerant pipe joins to compressor (can see dark-coloured lubricant stains around the joint areas). The loss of lub cause compressor to be noisy. If not too much damage already done to compressor by the friction from loss of lub, then re-lubricating will fix the noise.

Thanks relac. Does anyone know of a good guide or video on how to do that?

MrTktemple not really. After a bit of looking and a few plans for what I wanted to do, I started reading all kinds of terrible horror stories of what can happen when you open the lines, and I decided to just take it into the shop. Turns out compressor was completely shot, couldn’t hold vacuum, had to replace the whole system 👎
