I tried and tried to rig this circuit up with a transistor but as far as I can tell, the motor draws too much peak current for the transistor. I tried with a MOFSET too and couldn't get the motor to turn over (although a smaller motor would work). Maybe I'm just not clever enough. Ultimately I just used a small 5v relay, triggered by a MOFSET/transistor. I just used the 3.3v output on the motion sensor as a trigger and this completely obviated the need for an Arduino.

Now the thing about this is does it melt organs?

You don't need to do all that. Just simply code an external c program to read the com port data and then you can use keypressed based on that.

Instead of a sound, I want to add a small green/red indicator. Then I need to package the device into a Keychain portable. When used on Portable Johns, it will show green if empty, red if occupied. Used for concerts, construction yards, and other events where porta johns are used with poor occupant indication on the door; so knocking can be avoided to search for am empty stall.

You don't need winshell. We can do it with os module. And rather than if statement for error checking its vetter to use try and except block
