Welp, I gained my state choral win if I recal, back in 92 with the always awesome RHS choral group, I was just a bass/baritone ...shoutout to a badais choral instructer who pushed me, even to to point of agreeing to private lessons on one of the siderooms... letter jackets are kinda cool, even to this day.... god bless the RHS choir

Good audio recording. If the uploader may see this: The piece played by the HHS Symphonic Band is actually spelled "Shenandoah".
@mal-louise-f5 ай бұрын
This is a very famous traditional American folk song (here, arranged for concert band by Frank Ticheli) that originated sometime around or after the civil war. Commonly sung as a sea shanty, it is contested whether the song refers to the yearning of a Missouri river fur trader who is in love with the daughter of the Oneida Iroquois chief John Skenandoa (commonly spelled 'Shenandoah'): "Oh, Shenandoah, I love your daughter / Away, you rolling river". Other interpretations include "Shenandoah" referring to the Shenandoah river, valley, and many other places sharing such a name. Regardless of its many interpretations, the song remains a staple in American culture, even being recorded for a 10-year remembrance ceremony for the tragedy of 9/11. The exact words and specific meanings of the song may shift or change, but the themes remain the same: yearning, loving, and longing. With sweeping passion like the river waves against the voyageurs' boats, Shenandoah resonates among us all. Anyways, that's how you spell Shenandoah, that's the story behind it (as told by someone whose only relation to it is that she played it at this concert), and that's why culturally and historically significant folk songs rule and bands should play them more. Did we (the symphonic band) do this song justice? Debatable, up to you, but I think there's some incredibly moving and emotional sections the different parts of this piece. Like at 3:54 (which I am not biased about at all since that's when I got to play the melody, absolutely not) the band rises in both dynamic and intensity, producing this grand, broad sound that even crescendos into a series of punctual brass and woodwind hits around 4:07 before gracefully lowering dynamic once more. As musicians, we are always hard on ourselves, but I think we did pretty great. I can't wait for next year's 'Shenandoah' (in a metaphorical sense--if we play this song two years in a row I will lose my marbles), and I just love the beauty and emotion in the music we make!
