Not only did Slam Stewart and Major Holley have rhythm they were in perfect octave pitch.

Yes, he's always sings a register higher than what's he played on a bass, and Major Holler sings octave down.

Although classically trained Slam was denied a career in Symphonies because of segregation, legend has it that when Slam played in major city the front tables in the clubs were occupied by Classical String Bass players marveling at Slam Arco(bow)Playing!

Slam sometimes had his moments of complete musical blundering (in which he was said to have ruined some good recordings with Art Tatum) but in these later recordings you can really hear how gentle and nimble he was with the bass and his voice! Major is like his polar opposite in that he's not singing alto, he's singing lower and rougher with a lot of throat vibration and it gives his solos a raspy sound. Two masters and another hundred years and we won't have another two like them!
