Don’t want to kill the vibe, but the headphones are not neutral by any means, they have somethign called the harman curve and it’s what people normally gravitate to thinking it sounds the best.
@tbhv
@tbhv 22 күн бұрын
Thanks for saying, I’m not sure I mentioned it in the video. I do think matching the Harman curve is precisely why these sounds so balanced and neutral. I mean unless you are making music for dogs or bats or something. Maybe Brian Eno could come up with another curve for airports 😂

excellent review. please can akg make a 371mk2 which fixes the problems. such a pity about the quality issues on the 371. perhaps with very careful use they might last well. but not confidence inspiring. i would otherwise get a pair. 770 80 ohms are a lot more costly and then have slightly hyped top end.

How do you think, which headphones are better for listening to music? DT770 or K371? I just want good sound, instrument separation, and a rich sound. I mostly listen to rock.

Yea i was looking for a headphone that does it all Cause by bass cheap headphones give good... heavy emotions in a sense. but miss the subtle sounds. the AHT 20x i have is good for "Holy shit i can hear individual strings" but it compleltly strips the song of its soul and i looked at rtings and here i am. why am i commenting. usually i comment only on some weird hate videos or maybe some "Oh look im here too" type way. I watched your video and quit which i have always thought is how youtube should be. none of this compulsion of social nonsense. So im commenting just to... push the algorithnm for my own selfish benifit hopefully if i get athe akg k371 it will be good

I have had the headphones for more than a year, and I can say they do have durability issues. And you're right, they are in the joint at 6:34 (the yokes). The cable has no isolation in that spot and eventually wore out in my headphones, and was hard to fix. I needed to replace the entire cable that connects the drivers. Also, all the ear pads and the headband were completely worn out. Unfortunately, there are no official replacements. I bought a 3rd party replacement part from Amazon, and that completely changed the sound. Also when I got my headphones initially I felt that the sound from different drivers was unequal. Left and right drivers have different impedances to compensate for the cable driver-to-driver resistance. I don't notice the difference anymore though, at least don't pay attention to it.

Small correction: The leather is not faux leather, but real leather. Don't forget.. when these headphones came on the market they where much more expensive than now and certainly not 'budget' cans as you seem to think.
@tbhv
@tbhv 2 ай бұрын
Hey thanks for clarifying about the leather, like I said very convincing 😂. I do still think these are budget headphones but that’s just for my application. In your experience with them (I’m assuming you own these too) where have you found wear? For example did the self adjusting strap ever loosen for you? Thanks!
@andymill8552
@andymill8552 2 ай бұрын
@@tbhv Not much wear. I have them for 4 years now. The clamping force is slightly less compared to when they where new. The self adjusting strap did not loosen as far as I can tell. The fabric of the earpads gets ugly over time, so I recently bought some new earpads from the brand 'Dekoni' (just Google) they are available in leather and suede. I have not used them yet, so I can not describe how they change the sound. All in all: sturdy headphones.

@@tbhv Strange... I just replied to you, but my post is gone (??). I try again: I have this headphone for 4 years now. Holds up nicely. The strap did not loosen as far as I can tell. The clamping force is now slightly less than when I bought it (which is a good thing). The fabric of the earpads got a bit ugly (after 4 years), but I have ordered some replacements from Dekoni Audio. All in all I can conclude that the build quality is good. Not much to complain about. The X2HR's are IMO mostly fun headphones to listen to. For analytical (recording and monitoring) purposes I think Sennheisers are more neutral, but for fun I like the X2's more. But that is just my subjective opinion 😉

If someone is considering these headphones be warned: Their builtquality is the worst you probably will come across. Last year I purchased the 371. It broke after six weeks. I sent it back and received a new one after a waitingtime of a month: That second unit broke at the exact same spot just five weeks later. Never again AKG.

AKG is unfortunately not the same anymore after samsung acquired them. I used to have the akg k550 mkiii, which uses the same drivers. Unfortunqtely after years of use, they're now broken in an unfixable state, already fixed them with epoxy multiple times. Now that no stock is left of the 550 series I was actually considering the 371, good to know about their flaws. Maybe I should actually get the audio technica m50x. I honestly feel like there's nothing in the market that can replace the 550's, which is a shame.

@@4liceD_ Thanks for sharing. I liked the K141 I bought some 20 years ago. For a wireless option to replace the (two) K371 at work, I got the M20 from Audio Technica. Personally I think it is great and I used it every workingday nonstop from 7 to 5 since I got it. I got the M50 you mentioned and the DT990 at home for music production. While the M50 is also great I'd personally prefer the M20 because its weight: For only 50 bucks it is the lightest over-ear providing the best performance (sound, durability, batterylife). Being so light, comfortable and unnoticeable is important to me. I used it hundreds of hours since I wear it 10 hours each day at work - my absolute favorite.

hey man had a question: so i'm a singer/songwriter. I really don't know how to mix that well but i only need to do that with my own songs so its not like i'd do it for a living. I was thinking I could get the k731 and start mixing my recorded stuff on that since i had been doing it on my airpods, which is an unnatural sound signature having consumer targeted earphone and not even a headphone, i know it's stupid but yeah. But i was thinking along the lines when you said if you're working with a neutral sound, you can work upwards make it sound good, and test the mix on car speakers, soundbars, earphones later on to see how it translates. But for unnatural sounding headphones, you'll have to work backwards and learn the sound of that first before you actually make stuff that translates well into every other audio device that your music could potentially be listened on. So better to start off with the same neutral soundstage because you know what to do there instead of with every different unnaturally tuned headphone, you have to learn it's sound from scratch. BUT, airpods and small headphones like that are bright, bassy, unnatural. Aren't those what our audience listens to everything on? If that's the target audio output device then why not just mix and master for it? If you can make it sound good on a low end device like an airpods or galaxy buds, you can make it sound good on everything, no? Also, you said the dt770 is kind of like a confidence booster, it already makes you sound better from the start and I agree that's helpful but what we're actually doing is pretty much gaslighting ourselves if we think oh this is how it will actually sound in reality too, which it won't. But everybody in the world (music consumers) are already listening through airpods and $20 earphones so they're listening through the same gaslight? Wouldn't this change things? If the sound is actually coming out of unnatural sounding airpods why not just mix and master from it and for it? Does that make sense? So for my use case (recording, mixing, mastering): which one would you suggest, the k371 or the dt770?
@tbhv
@tbhv 2 ай бұрын
@@khizararif1355 hey thanks for your comment and sharing more about what you have been working on! You have a great point- mixing and mastering so things sounds good on the most popular listening sources is a great idea. I think the problem is you can’t guarantee people will listen with AirPods specifically , despite how popular they are. Ideally our music gets played in lots of places. Realistically people might show someone else a song through their phone’s speakers first and foremost. So we could extend the question, why not mix just using our phone speakers? And so this exercise confronts a lot of the rudimentary aspects of mixing. For one, consistency; we need whatever tool we use to mix, to be reliable, not only in frequency response but also performatively. So one reason mixing on phone speakers won’t work is the difficulty hearing good frequency response; good stereo response; and also sounds interference between the speakers and your ears with ambient noise around you. As you mentioned we ultimately need to learn whatever sound profile we are listening to. Assuming you are generally careful with your equipment I might recommend the AKG 371’s. This is because while they may not be durable or quite as comfortable they have 2 or maybe 3 big advantages which out weigh those cons. 1) the detachable and extra cables which improves longevity and is more convenient for different applications 2) the neutral sound profile is better all around for mixing and yielding the most translatable mixes- even for mixing to AirPods and 3) the low impedance means you will be able to drive these headphones very easily. That is practically important where you actually need to be able to hear lower signal in order to mix and master. The 371’s are comparable in terms of comfort and probably more versatile in terms of use. My only real gripe was the build quality and the fact they failed in less than a year. I want to assume that doesn’t always happen, but if you are concerned about that- then I might recommend the dt770’s instead only because they will likely last longer. If you can afford it however, I might recommend the dt700 pros instead which are only slightly more expensive than the 770’s but have fixed the various shortcomings of the 770’s (more neutral sounding, lower impedance, detachable cables.) All with the added benefit of the critical frequency response and confidence boosting build quality. I am using the DT 700’s now and I am very happy with them. Still not as neutral as the 371s but certainly a useful frequency response. Best of luck and let me know how it goes!

@@khizararif1355 I might add, I know it is easy to assume everyone is listening on junky earbuds. But please consider, is that your target audience? Consider you might want someone like Rick Reuben to listen to your music and he certainly will be able to hear with the most critical equipment. The way I think of it, it is better to over compensate quality then under represent it. For example, when you get either of these higher quality headphones, I implore you to listen to your favorite songs of all time once more, try to notice how much more information is there and become reacquainted with the value of good audio fidelity!

I am debating between the 371 and 700 for tracking Vocals. Leaning to these two for the comfort and leakage factor
@tbhv
@tbhv 3 ай бұрын
Hey thanks for watching! I am grateful you found the video helpful! What I can say is if you are tracking I think the 700’s kill it for that purpose specifically! 371’s do a great of isolation but the build quality means you might not be able to rock out quite as hard- the trade off is that I think the 371’s will be useful for the mixing phase. My best advice is to try them out and see what you prefer since the object interaction plays a big role too! Good luck!

Dt 700 os definetely better fro tracking, the 371 since they seal is wonky (depending on your head size/shape) they might bleed sound into the mic while tracking.

Have you considered the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro? I heard many great things about it, and I'm going to test it very soon. Along with the DT 770 Pro 80 Ohms and the AKG K-361. I currently have a DT 880 Edition 600 Ohms as my daily driver, which is too quiet and too open for tracking (which is why I'm looking for decent closed-back low-impedance headphones). Currently on my desk are two Superlux cans (HD 660 Pro and HD 662 F), and the AKG K-182. Only the HD 660 Pro (modelled after the DT 770 Pro) is decent, but a little too bright. The HD 662 F distorts easily and has annoying cable noise, the AKG K-182 sounds muddy, very uneven and unnatural in the mids, and has very dull treble.
@VeitLehmann
@VeitLehmann 3 ай бұрын
Update: Now I had the HD 280 Pro, the DT 770 Pro, the AKG K-361 and the t.bone HD 815 (another DT 770 Pro knockoff) on my desk as well. Both the HD 280 Pro and the K-361 were far too lean sounding for my application. Very detailed, but mid-focused (especially the HD 280 Pro) without much width, depth and sparkle. The HD 815 had surprisingly great mids, but they were too bass-heavy and didn't have great treble (low-treble peak, very little detail and no air). I found that for practicing and recording bass, I don't want/need the most neutral sound but I prefer a little V-shaped tuning. The DT 770 Pro provide exactly that, still with a lot of clarity in the mids and mostly accurate timbre. Adding the rugged build and serviceability, I quickly made the decision to keep them.
