But here you have a solid performing turntable. No quibbles here. But remember, a lot of people are not using anything near the quality that you have. They have 50 Yr. old Technics, Sansui, Pioneer tables. Heck, even older AR turntables. That's the audience I am trying to reach. The new and unaware. I have only seen one vintage Thorens turntable in 40 years that had both a decent main bearing and a truly working tonearm. Or, could you imagine an Ania on a P1? So, you need to look at the whole picture with a lot of people just now starting into vinyl.

Well, the same could be said for a sports car vs a Ford Focus. The point of the video is that if you are going to get under the bonnet of an advanced turntable, you need the right tools to do it right. Such turntables are not for everyone, for sure. I see no issue with that. I had a customer go from an older LP12 to a Rega P3 because he was up in age and wanted something simpler. A valid move.

I'd never use the term "audiophile" to describe myself but I'll tell you this: I would never live with a pair of speakers that need to be positioned just so and that require me to sit rigidly in one ideal spot and hold my head at just the proper angle in order to achieve the perfect "soundstage" illusion. Music has always been an integral part of my life, and that means I have to be free to live and interact with it. The reproduction equipment is not the boss of me. I tend to love vintage '60s and '70s gear because not only is it designed to be beautiful to look at (yes, home hi-fi equipment is part of the furniture), it's built to last and it sounds warm and inviting -- as much "home" as "hi-fi."
@audibleeleganceinc
@audibleeleganceinc Күн бұрын
I think you state a lot of valid points here and I am glad you stated them so. There are those who are willing to make the commitment in positioning which occurs with any flat panel type speaker. Regardless, though, they can produce fine music but without the stereo image that you refer to. Much older stuff from the 60s and 70s did little towards the stereo image and in many respects, undermined it. That, in no way, kept any of us from falling in love with music. Car stereo anyone? Funny you say this as I rather model my videos after live television of the 50s and 60s. No script, very typically one take, and very little editing. Of course, there will be mistakes, misspeaks, you name it. I'm not all dressed up but show myself as a fellow human being. It might wander, it might be an old man reminiscing, yet in all of it I am trying to get people to think. I have shortened my videos because today's world does not really have much of an attention span and prefer the CNN style of information. My blogs on my website are read by a few notwithstanding that is where I do my best work. I've left my channel open for comments and some of the best information can actually be found there. I've been corrected a few times and that's ok. None of us will ever live long enough to know everything correctly. Life is Learning. I've removed a few as well as I do not tolerate insults or insults leveled on other commentors. None of this is all that important and that's coming from a husband whose wife has had 2 heart transplants in 4 years and nearly died 9 times. Many of those trips required 11 hour drives, sometimes overnight, with little notice, from SE Virginia to the Cleveland Clinic. So, yeah, I get a bit amused when someone carries on as if anything they say or do will be remembered by anyone in 50 years. So, thanks for the spot on observations from one senior to another. Sorry if I chatted to long. Enjoy the music is what it really is all about.

I think of myself as a semi-audiophile. I am looking into new speakers currently, but not because I dislike my current ones. I bought them in 1993, and am thinking to upgrade them due to their age and uncertainty as to when they may quit on me. If they quit once I've retired (hoping that's this year), I may not be able to replace them with anything comparable. So it's a preemptive replacement, I guess.
@audibleeleganceinc

Well, a lot has happened since 1993 but if you bought quality once, let that stand as the benchmark. Unless you have foam surrounds on your speakers, i don't see them giving out. It's foam that dries out and cracks that is the typical problem. I don't support re-foaming as it assumes the same flexibility that once was there. Good hunting. Here's a couple little stories for you amongst many. I have worked with a number of Cincinnati Symphony musicians over the years. The one aspect that they all share in common is that their sense of tonal balance is influenced by where they sit in the orchestra. It can also influence their choices in recordings like Deutsche Gramophone over others. Why? Because DG uses upwards from 50 to 100 microphones in the orchestra for recordings. What this delivers is massive detail and the stereo effect becomes a fiction created by the recording engineer. What they do share in common, across the board, is a keen sense of rhythm and pitch which I wholeheartedly support. What musicians can focus on, without distraction, is the quality of the performance itself and that is where it all belongs.

Musicians are the worst source for knowledge and fidelity. Very few own a decent stereo. They are into music. It might surprise you but, sound engineers also don't own stereos or play them.
@audibleeleganceinc
@audibleeleganceinc 2 күн бұрын
@@keithmoriyama5421 I think overall, the reason that most musicians don't own "decent" systems is that they make so few dollars. What they do make goes back into their craft. Their goals are different as well and there are times that the last thing they want to do is listen to more stuff of what they do. They too need an escape. Years ago I took up horseback riding and jumping and own a few horses. They give me peace. Do I have a no holds bar system at home? Nope. My main sources of music are Sirius Radio and a Baldwin Piano. And sometimes it is agonizing when people find me in public and want to talk audio while all I am doing is grocery shopping. The other thing that makes musicians different is that their perspective of sound is based upon what they play and where they are in the group. Their interest is really in the music itself structurally, timing, and pitch. Old country musicians were, in fact, the most critical about how things sounded, not this new bunch of, essentially, 60s rockabilly tunes. I do know of a couple really well know stars who do have great systems in terms of musical capability. A couple of them I use to challenge systems I sell and if you sniff around, you will find out who I am talking about. However, I think your comment stands on firm ground. Exactly. It is funny to me how many people get all tangled up in "their chosen aspect" when, in fact, most of them are unverifiable. Even the choice of microphones can have a dramatic effect on tonality itself and yet they are rarely listed in the information about the recording itself. Stereophile Magazine produced a very interesting CD on this subject with the speaker sounding very different on each one. Then, let's introduce the recording engineer and the mixing console. So, I look to rhythm first and then to pitch consistency. So, glad you can get together with friends and learn as opposed to preach. I like to listen to my music so I buy what I consider quality gear but at a reasonable price ( if you call $6500 system reasonable). But I'd be lying to you if I tell you I don't think of upgrading to perfect the sound. And I've bought into the cables and such. But what I don't do is buy multiple copies of music in any particular format. I do have some downloads, cd's, and vinyl copies of the same music. And can stream it for another version. What I don't do is buy multiple versions of an album to find a better recording. I don't have 8 versions of Dark Side of the Moon. I just bought my only copy of it a few years ago and it's a 2016 version. I bought a 2015 version of Ziggy Stardust. I don't buy for investment either. So I'm in it for the music, but I am kind of an audiophile because I want what I have to sound it's best. Oh, and I'm in my 60's, so I have had plenty of time to buy earlier versions.

Versions are a funny thing, really. My first experience with that was the Beatles White Album. Then, later, Mobile Fidelity came out with their "original" version on LP. That LP sounded like the most horrible AM radio I ever heard. It was brutal. Only upon investigation did I learn that what Mobile Fidelity did was absolutely correct. They pressed the unadulterated version of the original master tape. Interestingly enough, when it was produced, they realized they screwed up the equalization when making the recording so they "fixed" it at the production plant. Today, I am very much like you, I am happy to have one version and move on. I don't stream, myself, as I have already had enough experiences with questionable sources. Oh, it may be lossless I suppose, but lossless of what they transmitted remains the question. I have heard some pretty miserable examples which is why I prefer to demo from LP of CD because I at least know what I am working with. "Review the reviewers"! Best advice. It's just the same as doing critical analysis in research. Vet your sources, learn about your sources. Who influenced them. Lou's just a stand-up guy who will sell good quality gear which won't disappoint. It might not find "in search of the lost chord" but as stated, that's mythical. Hey Lou, thanks for the memory! I had to stop the video and rewind. Because when you brought up the perfume example, all of a sudden I had the wonderful memory of the first time I picked-up my wife (girlfriend at the time). Damn, she looked fine. But she was wearing a particular perfume and a human's best memories are typically associated with smell. Damn fine perfume! I can still smell it! Oh wait, this was about gear. I'm not an audiophile. I'm a music enthusiast! Got my gear, continue to fine tune, learn little tricks, clean vinyl carefully and the stylus too. But it's the music I love. Heck, I just did a little recent inventory on the number of good quality album pressings I've purchased. Were I a gear head, I could trade in about 50 albums for some more gear. Vinyl's gotten a little expensive... but that's a different story.

I do admit I like gear and own quite a bit of it. However, it is only a means to an end, giving my household the ability to listen to music in a variety of spaces throughout my home. I have far more interest and investment in the music. The gear is merely the vehicle that allows me to enjoy my library of recording. An irritation I have with a lot of Hi-Fi darlings is that they do not sound realistic. So, I have gone through quite a few pieces before settling on my current rig. Most present a performance as too pristine and revealing of every wart and wrinkle. When I deal with customers who are already arguing price because of resale values, they are not even looking at it from the perspective of enjoying music. They are trying to prepare to buy the next thing.

Hi Lou, let's see what type of audiophile you think I am. I was in your store just before moving out of Cincinnati (1996 or '97?), and was looking for a really good cd player that was affordable. I fell in love with the Rotel RCD 990 (Philips CDM 9 pro drive mechanism and dual Burr Brown PCM63K DACs) and at $1500 it was a very special player. You found that the model was discontinued and no more were coming your way. I asked if you would be willing to sell the display. You thought about it for a few seconds and said you'd even knock off a few bucks. You carefully wound up the power cord and boxed the unit for me to take home... and I'm still enjoying it to this day! Great memories! I've upgraded the other equipment in my system since then (current system includes Plinius SA-103 power amp, McIntosh C52 pre, and Sonus Faber Armati Futura speakers), but the cd player is still spinning my large cd collection and making me smile! Thanks, Kirk

I am both. In car speak, the one group would be called "gearheads". I love gear, but it has to serve the music. I have a friend's solid state integrated amp on loan and he has my tube phono pre. The solid state will really show complex lines of music to their best advantage in my system. I have a record that I use as a reference for a fast bass line and I have never before heard each note so clearly on my system. On large scale music it is much more sorted out. OTOH, I miss my tubes.

I am not an audio expert, but the last time I went into an audio store and listened to their expensive demo system I didn’t like the sound. I prefer the sound from my ancient Sony receiver that was brought over from Japan in around 1968 or 69 (I think it was their first solid state and it sounds sweet to me). If the new stuff sounded better I’d be interested, but it doesn’t. And I really like how it looks!

Simply put, you got a lousy demonstration. I've seen this a number of times where folks have no idea what they are doing and why they are doing it. You were right to say "screw this." Years ago I personally had a similar experience with the Mecca of Audio Lyric Hi-Fi. I listened to their mega system and yeah, I didn't get it. Years later some the the best reps in the country said that that system wasn't particularly good at all. So, trust your ears. Well done.

Any chain is no stronger than its weakest link. This is a general rule of building an audio or video system. Same goes within a phono system between the turntable structure, platter, motor, outer suspension, tone arm, cartridge, stylus, internal wirings, output cables. Some of these elements will have potential, some others will be the weaker links. Improving just one may be pointless or, at best, be only a small step needing to be completed by others to get a balanced quality improvement. And the most expensive improvement is not necessarily the most beneficial to the result.
@audibleeleganceinc
@audibleeleganceinc 5 күн бұрын
While your approach has a general correctness to it, my personal approach is a build forward strategy recognizing that few can afford to do everything right immediately. You can see this with how many speaker manufacturers there are today. People keep shooting the messenger boy rather than understanding that it all begins in the front end. Once information is mishandled, the next piece is not going to magically restore the message. When it comes to phono cartridges, I've seen way too many people buy expensive ones only to complain about how it sounds when, in fact, it's truly doing it's job on a piece of crap turntable. We do agree that the best improvement is typically not the most expensive. I'd say that's true about 75% of the time. But, there's all sorts of old lore and new BS that people follow to the natural end of frustration.

Modern stufff doesnt retain value like vintage. Modern stuff has no style. Often times there are no tone controls and if there is, its a single knob to navigate theough a small lcd screen. Give me analog tone controls and a real wood case and have it made in the usa or japan and id be more open to the new stuff. Also make it serviceable.
@audibleeleganceinc
@audibleeleganceinc 6 күн бұрын
Oh, I do enjoy the looks of vintage products but the value placed on them has become absurd. Much of them are far out of spec for starters. I could go on and on but I won't. Where you raise and interesting point is servicing. Here you have to find someone who can do component level diagnostics and repair assuming the parts can be found. On the other hand, modern receivers rely on board swaps and once they are gone, which can be very quick, well, its over. With AVRs, the technology changes so quickly that they become outdated before they typically die. Of course, many can not live without remote control, want bluetooth and now streaming. That's simply not found in 60 year old equipment. So, Yin and Yang.

Which Model causes this Goose bumps? Or which Thiel Modells do you recommend. Thera are only a few used ones available here in Germany. First off, active Naim SBLs are simply wonderful and will clearly outperform the Thiel 1.6s. I am of the sort where I would prefer a well organized speaker with a little less bass than a speaker that is disorganized with bass. Honestly, if you can find a way to make those SBLs active, it's worth it.

Another great video. I started to get my own gear in the early 80s and remember looking at something called a "line stage". What the H? My dad had a dynaco PAS2 and it had been called a "preamp". You just plugged in your record player and out came music. The salesman explained to me that it was "better" to get an outboard dedicated phono pre amplifier. So, the concept has been around at least that long. Yesterday, I was visiting a music friend. He regularly uses a very high quality integrated amp with built in phono preamp, not an afterthought built in, but one of good quality. I took my tube stand alone phono pre and SUT to his house because he wanted to hear it. I won't mention names but when new it sold in the $3,000 to $4,000 range. We both agreed that the stand alone unit was superior in many but not all respects. There is no substitute for using your own ears. To finish the story, he sent me home with his unit and kept mine for a week or two so I am using the internal phono stage on his unit and the solid state amplification. My regular amp is a tube integrated, A/B design which is a very ordinary design for integrated tube amps. On turning on the solid state unit, the music could not be more different coming from my speakers. I had been toying with the idea of trying solid state again, but thanks to my friend, don't believe I will do so (my opinion only, many folks love SS and I completely get that). Use your ears.
