My Dad bought a McIntosh system in the 1970’s: MR 78 tuner, C28 preamp and MC 2105 amp. All our friends and classmates would bring their albums over to our place for listening sessions. Lucky us. Our Mom still has it. I’ve yet to hear anything sound better.

Thank you. We all have plenty to do and, in my case, my wife just received her second heart transplant after 4 tough years with the first. There have been a lot of trips to the Cleveland Clinic and not all under good circumstances. Likewise, we have a farm with her miniature horses which provides some level sanity and enjoyment for her while providing a lot of work. At one point, I could not even be out in public in Cincinnati without someone approaching me and firing up audio questions. It gave me a minor understanding of what famous people live with all the time. So, now I am doing videos to a wide range of people, around the world, who are simply looking for reasonable advice or insights. Some love the history while others do not, some provide insight and others provide unsubstantiated opinions, and the list goes on and on. Overall, it's been fun to respond to most while doinking a few trolls. But in the end, there is nobody who has heard everything and that's simply the truth. Oh, and I pity anybody who tries.

You are most welcome. I read quite a bit and when I heard the news, well, of course I chuckled. But then it was time to read and the first place I went was to the press announcement from Bose. There, the CEO clearly laid out the reasoning and, having experienced it once before with Mark Levinson/Lexus, it all made perfect sense. Equally so, Bose has every reason to maintain the reputation of McIntosh & Sonus Faber in order to sell the names to the automotive industry. The standing question is how much of a bump both of those lines will receive from becoming more publicly visible vs. how much of a decline may occur as the home audio name will lose some of its "you have arrived" appeal. I don't see much of the later as the product is principally sold to those who are quite wealthy and who you will never find sitting around an audio dealership comparing and listening. They don't do that, nor do they have the time or interest in doing so. They just want good stuff and move on. Well, please tell others about my channel and the other 200 plus videos. I actually believe that BOSE will help financially to make both McIntosh & Sonus Faber more successful than the previous 3 ownership groups. BOSE is privately held, and until recently made many of their products in the USA, and still have 2 factories in the USA, and one in Mexico. I really think this will be a good thing!
@audibleeleganceinc20 сағат бұрын
I was not aware of the Mexican plant but am fairly confident that if they really spread these wings into the automotive sector as I suspect, it would most likely be produced in the far east simply to meet the volume requirements. Well, I think the most recent reactions do not recognize that the first change of ownership happened some time ago. McIntosh, themselves, have now been sold twice if we are counting ownerships. I am not certain what you mean by "lost their way" unless you are considering the impact of the AV industry which did, indeed, have it's impact. However, those companies who did not adapt to the changing demand simply faded away or are obscure by today's standards. If you take the big names of audio from the early 80s to say, the mid 90s, they simply are not really visible. Conrad Johnson, Audio Research, Spectral, and the list goes on and on. Multiply that by 5 for speaker companies. Yet, there is a new set of seedlings coming along which we support. Like any industry, it is cyclical. It doesn't speak to good or bad, it simply is a fact of life.

There are two things I hope to see out of this. One the mighty Bose marketing arm behind these two products. Albeit McIntosh already has a lot of brand recognition to non-members of the hobby. I would like to see Sonus Faber also become a household name. Second, would be the Bose genius for lifestyle systems filtering into the McIntosh and Sonus Faber fold. Sadly, young people do not listen to music the same way Boomers do. I would like to see products from McIntosh and Sonus Faber provide a high-quality gear that caters to the technologies young folks use.

Well, we shall see what occurs over the next year or so. The first thing that will need to happen is a full review of both operations to understand how they operate. I did corporate takeovers, two of the worlds' largest at that time, and the first step is to fully understand what you have purchased and what assets are immediately available. As for marketing those brands with cheaper products, which is what you are talking about, risks the dilution of reputation. So, for example, if Rolex (or any other really high end watch company) started to make digital watches like Apple, do you think that would help the aura of Rolex? I think not. But, we shall see.

@@audibleeleganceinc. Both Sonus Faber and McIntosh are considered overpriced by sane folk's standards. Only us crazy Audiophile's would see an $8k 2-Channnel receiver as a great bang for the buck product. Most people do not understand as to why such a piece is so expensive. It would help both brands to have some decent for the money products that folks with less discretional income could afford. Yes, you would have to make compromises to meet the price point, but their engineering teams have the expertise to figure it out. There are more and more brands that offer great sound for not a whole lot of money. The way I see it such components could be a gateway product to the higher end product within the line. I'm not asking for less than, as so much they expand the product line, to include product for those just starting out in life might be able to obtain. Like you, we will see. I never been a fan of BOSE products, so I do hope things do not go in the direction of overhyped, overpriced mediocrity.

@audibleeleganceinc great video…You got yourself a new subscriber! I have a Peachtree nova500 which is a class D amplifier and I’ve always been very happy with the sound. I think the argument of class D versus class A/B is silly… It all depends on how the manufacturer develops a quality amplifier. If it sounds good to your ears, then it shouldn’t matter what class it is! Also, a lot of manufacturers are using GAN-fet which may be a game changer… Peachtree is doing this, as well as Orchard Audio and a lot of other manufacturers. So I’m going to rely on what my ears tell me and not worry about amplifier class. Thanks again for a great video!

Thank you for your comment which, really, comes down to experience. Perhaps at the most extreme costs there might be a real difference but that might only be obtainable by, what, 10 people? I prefer to focus upon what a larger audience can enjoy and possibly afford. The primary goal of any good dealer is to find products that have a great design, quality execution, and solid musical performance. Price is irrelevant. It's when price becomes the primary focus that things get all screwed up and the purpose of ownership, to enjoy music, becomes lost. I could probably make a solid case that once we moved beyond the mechanical Edison cylinder to electrical reproduction that purity was lost. I suppose it is kinda like speakers. Unless they are large and weigh a lot, they cannot be good. Headphones are a rather personal item much like I know many who cannot stand earbuds for, essentially, the same observations. I personally use Motorola because it also has a microphone which I use for phone calls. I rather discovered those after finding a set made for snowboarding helmets. They are bluetooth but sound much better wired. You might catch them on me once in awhile as I do videos. I've owned Sennheiser, the old HD414s and several AKGs. We once also sold the Beyerdynamics. My other set is one of the original noise cancelling headphones from Sennheiser, the HDC 451. That reminds me, I also had the JVC HM-200E series binaural headphones when I would make field recordings with a CD-1636 which I still have. Then, you will have some owners who swear by the Grados. I had one person complain about how screetchy they were which is about the furthest possibility I know of and likely came down to impedance incompatibility which most consumers don't even know about or even care. Press a button, have whatever is delivered, decide you don't like them because they don't work well with your portable and send them back at the sellers expense. So, we are happy with the Grados and, in general, their reliability.

I bought a Naia package. Upgraded from a VPI super prime scout with SoundSmith Zephyr MIMC* cart (~$5K). What is immediately apparent is the more detailed and clean bass on the Naia package. Traded in my VPI, so could not do side-by-side for more detailed impression, and long term audio memory is infamously poor. What I dislike about the Naia is the lack of height adjustable feet (unforgivable, IMHO; there may be a third-party option from TNG-spinner, still gotta confirm), and the bad joke of a dust cover with no lateral protection of cart/stylus. But then again, did not buy the TT for the dustcover, got a third party acrylic box. I was first concerned about the foam, as all foam will disintegrate (seen plenty of bad foam as a museum curator; we care about long term stability of materials). But I am reasonably sure that the Rega foam will outlive me. So all is good.

Thank you for your comment and we are quite lucky here locally as there is a shop that can make any size box cover you wish. We sold a Clearaudio turntable with two arms (one for stereo, one for mono). Tables like that also need a box. I like your comment about height adjustable feet but not many tables come with that anyway relying upon a level surface to start. I, myself, prefer a wall shelf as it also keeps it from any vibration or deflection of the floor but that is not always an option for folks. @@audibleeleganceinc Re leveling, once you pass the Uturn level, most tables can be leveled somehow. Either with feet (VPI, Techniques, etc) or through plinth suspension (e.g., my old Project 6.1). Rega is the exception here. Some have argued that this is to sell their wall mount. In the end, I made my own leveling base from 1.5" oak in outline of table with speaker spikes. Bandsaw, a bit of sanding, router table to round edges, Fostner bits, bee wax, done. However, I question this approach now, following a nice video by Nadel Verpflichtet on spikes/weight (coupling) vs. foam/rubber (isolating) and what to use where and why. That's where the TNG-spinner rubberized feet come in. Just don't know yet whether they are compatible with the Naia. Re wall mount, with drywall I wonder whether that is not acting like a giant membrane collecting vibrations over large area that is only attached at limited points. Wall mounts may work better with brick/concrete walls.

Outboard active dc speaker protection in line with the terminals is what I found. Service Bryston Canada wrote back saying they still don’t equip them with that when I asked about it. Seems odd. Guess it’s not the same as protection for the amp itself. Anyone know? Others say use fast blow fuses, but to me might not be fast enough. Others say the capacitors in the crossovers should do the job; theoretically true. There are inboard ones too, running active off the power supply. Some with electronic (no moving parts) speaker shutoff as well as those older type mechanical relays. The latter might arc when disconnecting upon sensing dc and if higher current can damage or fuse the contacts. Protection relays run from under ten bucks to boutique ones in the hundreds. Some are easy to DIY others best to have a tech install. Gives me some comfort , or at least I’m counting on it, with my older Altec woofs and diaphragms.

Actually, it is not a distant memory at all from the 70s sort of thing. It was giving respect to a vintage product that was actually properly powered. I was surprised. Now certainly it was not anywhere near present gear but you could see the seeds of performance in it. As for old stuff, yes, some of it can be quite fun to listen to and I know of a couple of Radio Shack pieces that are equally surprising. As for very expensive anything, well, that's where my industry has some problems. Some dealers bring in expensive things not because they are good but because they are some sort of merit badge. Frankly, some of the most expensive rooms I have heard over the years could be equaled by Walmart. Where they bad products? Well, I don't know. Maybe it was a Ferrari in the hands of Fisk automotive. That was the name of K-Marts' auto centers for those unfamiliar with the name. So, yep, it is certainly possible that you listened to some things and left with the thought "I don't get it." Folks are finding used gear anywhere and without any concern about its condition, merely flipping them for bucks.

I really do like the look and the build. Unfortunately, the price... . More seriously, I do wonder not so much about price point and real audible improvements. With having only a "mid-Fi" system - say sum total $6500 - would there be a noticeable-significant improvement in sound quality? I don't know - don't know if my ears would hear the difference. I do know that there'd be about a $16K confirmation bias. LOL

We have the entire line of Rega turntables on display so there is a range to choose from and two of them are below $1,000. For years I have had the "marginal return" argument presented to me and I have a pretty simple answer. I suppose Michelangelo should have simply used a spray gun on the Sistine chapel because the Catholic Church would have been able to collect 4 years of donations. If art is judged by accounting, none of it would make any sense at all. What real sense is there to a painting? In the case of audio, it is the pursuit of the best reproduction of music itself which has really only been possible for about 150 years or so. Before that, there were no recordings. The music simply died with its creator. Now, whether or not one wishes to spend that amount of money, or any money for that fact, is a personal decision. I don't make those for my customers. I present the product for what it can do and let them decide. Many people choose the P3 because it simply plays the music more correctly than a P1 or P2. Then, there are those who chose above the P3 with a P6, P8, or P10. The Naia is above all of those and quite honestly, is quite a bit better than some tables costing 4 to 5 times a much. We try to find the best performance for the least amount of dollars which is why we call it sensible audio. Likewise, there are those who see no sense of buying a turntable for more than $100. Well, ok, if that is the level of musical performance that satisfies your needs, fine. We choose not to sell things in those sort of price ranges because we also recognize that once the original signal is altered or obscured, the next piece in the audio chain is not going to magically fix it. It's over. It doesn't matter how much you spend on a camera if the lens is never in focus. Same thing with audio. So, if you enjoy the fruits of vinyl, well, we have offerings for that. If you don't and prefer to stream whatever quality they provide, well, we have equipment for that too. In the end, it really comes down to getting a decent demonstration for yourself so you can decide. A CNET review won't do it. I mean, how often do you strictly follow movie reviews? I've read some great reviews only to end up with a miserable experience. To me Oppenheimer was a mess yet it got great reviews. It simply did not suit my needs. It may have pleased others to no end. If someone cannot do a demonstration for you that explains the difference in cost, then buy the cheaper one. Sadly, there's a lot of very expensive equipment in this hobby that simply misses the mark. We do our best to avoid those.
@audibleeleganceinc14 күн бұрын
A worthy question and thank you for asking. As you chose the Planar 3 over the Planar 2 or Planar 1 at that time, what you hear as you ascend the line is a continuation of better musical performance in rhythm, pitch, and emotion. You would also begin to hear more details in the recording itself. Pretty much the same sort of leaps from the Planar 3 to the P6, P8 or P10. So, if you were to improve your turntable, you would receive back better and better performance from the Hana ML. As it is, you are not getting the full benefit of that purchase and we do sell Hana and it is a fine cartridge. As I am fairly sure you have time on the Hana, do not step up in tables and remount the Hana. You will not be able to position it so that the wear on the stylus forms the same angle as the before to the record grooves. You risk damage to the Vinyl. Look up my video on buying used cartridges. My advice is to continue to enjoy what you have and should you have an interest in getting a better table, stop by a Rega dealer and let them show you the difference. If you think it's worth it, you know what to do. If not, get another cartridge and continue to happily listen to your music. A real demo is essential and do not go by reviews. My feelings about reviews are equal to reviews on how food tastes or what is a good movie. Thank you for taking the time to contribute to the channel. @@audibleeleganceinc Yes, yes, and yes. Lou, I truly do appreciate your analogies, metaphor, and informed common sense. I also appreciate the education. So, my concern is not so much about "diminishing returns", it's always about will I hear that which I love, better? If I went from my 'serviceable', pedestrian Fluance rt85 with the Ortofon Blue, which does generally please me (mostly because I've taken great care of my vinyl and nowadays research before buying great pressings of great performances) - will I hear even more? If I stepped up to one of those Planar P6, 8,10 are those upgrades substantial in sound quality? Would it ever be advisable to purchase a $16K turntable to put into a $6K system? My brain struggles with the sense of that. I also just don't know what is the end game, gain when getting to that higher level of quality gear? Fortunately, I do a a decent brick and mortar shop close by and can try to make some of these discernments with my own ears albeit, this shop's additional components are all at least one pay grade or higher than my stuff, i.e., got my Rogue Audio Sphinx there and that's basically as low as they go.

@@zizendorf Not having heard your table, it is hard to exactly know. I am inclined to think a P3 with the new ND5 would be an improvement and then upwards from there. How much you spend depends upon how much you use it, really. A great power tool in the closet is really of little value. So, set up an appointment with your table vs a Rega and you will know. I can not place a judgement upon what is best and we all have other needs as well. With my wife's condition, I no longer have a system at home. All resources are directed towards her support, the farm, and my business. Frankly, I don't have the time to sit down and listen. So, it's always a personal judgement call to decide what is best for you. I cannot do that for you.

I'm sorry Lou but, I can be rather "basic" in my understanding about some aspects of audio reproduction. What do they do, for whom - what condition might they be needed? I'm assuming booming resonance in corners? If/when I ever get that, it's only when playing vinyl at high, high volumes (which I rarely use). I won't get any of that with my CD player.
@audibleeleganceinc15 күн бұрын
Let me address your basic understanding from a different angle. The human ear locks in on the loudest (highest amplitude) sound for both location and understanding. When there are two sources (or more) of a sound, understanding may be difficult and it's location undetectable. Thus, when you are trying to talk across a gymnasium, for example, it is difficult to both understand and to know where the sound is coming from. As you walk closer to each other, there will become a moment when both "lock" in. That is because the direct sound (speech) is louder than the first reflections. In both stereo and home theater, there is a steering logic. In stereo, it is provided by the difference in the arrival time of the sound recorded. In home theater, this is also true but there is also intentional delays to create the effects of things moving sonically. Where devices like ASC tube traps and others come into play is dealing with these reflections or imbalances in frequencies affecting both the clarity and location of the sound. The most common ones addressed are known as first reflections. Think of sound coming out of the speaker and bouncing off the side wall like a billiard ball hitting the first rail. Thus, some form of control is used at that point to reduce (absorb) the amplitude of that signal. It is easy to find these points by sitting in your listening position and having someone move a mirror down the side walls until you can see the face of the speaker reflected in the mirror. That's a first reflection point. What many people forget, by the way, is that the same thing happens off of ceilings and floors. Where devices like the ASC Traps come into play, which by the way was first created by Bell Laboratories, is providing a variable adjustment to the absorption or reflective needs. This is done by a tube with a slot in it and depending upon the specific frequency range targeted, the trap diameter changes. Smaller diameters address higher frequencies than say large diameter ones. Conversely, the larger the diameter, the less effective they are at higher frequencies. This is because each frequency has a known length to form a complete wave. Flat panel devices, say office dividers, are very narrow in the range they work and there is no changing their effect. That's why such things are used in call centers so that you don't hear other voices. Does their "effect" depend upon volume? Not really although volume may make it more obvious. But rooms full of reflections usually disrupt both the sense of stereo imagery and the steering of sound in home theaters. Many original THX certified speakers, for example, specifically controlled vertical dispersion to avoid reflections off the ceiling (principally) or the floor. In theaters, it is quite common to have some form of damping material on the side walls to avoid those first reflections for any location in the theater. The biggest risk of such devices is a combination of over-damping a room and/or not addressing the right frequency where the problem exists. In a funny sort of way, that's why many equalizers in home usually looked like a smile. They knew they had a problem but did not know how to fix it and sometimes it is the room itself. Going about it without understanding what is wrong is like constantly adding things to a soup where you end up with a large pot is distasteful goo. Hope this helps you see (hear) the picture a bit better. Thanks for the question.

@ Outstanding answer! And very thorough. I think I get it! I’m aware of my side wall first reflection. In my listening room the left channel has nothing but a curtain off of which to reflect. The right channel side wall first has a “vent”, as there’s a small French door, a foot to three, when open. Just going back to my original question; being familiar to an extent with all reflections, I believe this is why I stay away from rear- ported speakers and perhaps why I like my Tannoy’s, with their down firing into a plinth designed to fire forward. And least that’s my belief.

@@zizendorf Well, I had written an answer but since I have sweaty palms and a track pad, it went blip before I could save it. So, my second answer was perhaps more polished. Glad you liked it. Personally, I have had my share of experiences with ports and in some cases, added bungs to reduce their effect much to the improvement to the speaker. Not too familiar with the downward approach other than with subwoofers. So, if it works for you, then it is success.

Was auditioning speakers and the Naim Unity Nova heavily over the last 6 months, the thing that keeps coming up time and again in relation to Naim is service and service issues, the amount of threads on their community around repairs to units that are less than 12 months old means I have no confidence in this brand. On the other hand I've had products from Cyrus for 15 years which have never had an issue. What is going on at Naim? These were always premium products but it looks like the only thing that is premium now is the price.

We are starting to play with that but there remains two challenges of which I can control 1, that being the quality of the microphone used. At this moment, we do not have any horns, we don't have ribbon speakers, (we should also include planar designs) so the display would be incomplete. Great idea, however.

I have a Marantz 2500. Suits me just fine. Don't get me wrong I'd love the idea of having the newest amp but in terms of longevity I don't see any of them lasting. I remember looking at one and it had seven boards placed vertically in slots all computer traced and totally unserviceable if it went kaput. Yes it was a high end name brand but everyone was passing on it Also thhe newer ones are cheap with tons of plastic and even some if you're remote goes so does your access to the main receiver. Sure you have the new Marantz at $15k but that's out of my budget. Besides 250 watts per side on a vintage is clearly enough.

A rare bird indeed. Where I raise the flag is I have seen these advertised for $5,000 and unserviced. As most people don't even listen to FM (and no need for a cool oscilliscope), nor the need for that much power, there are plenty of fine products out there like Rogue that don't cost 15K. So, as for longevity, I have seen plenty of it's junior unit, the 2325 well deserving of a trash can. The last one brought into me was full of rust and corrosion on the metal chassis inside and lord knows what condition those pots were in. I've see people ask $2.5K for those. So, if you have fine working one and you love it, great. But there are so many neophytes who don't have a clue that it is only fair to warn them so they don't step in crap.

@audibleeleganceinc Agreed. Luckily my Marantz was from the original owner in beautiful condition. As was the second one I found. Both rebuilt by a good friend Randy Buckner at Out West Vintage stereo in Arizona. But people like him are becoming rare as they go towards a deserving retirement (he's close to 70 and his eyes and neck are having problems). All credit goes towards people like you and Randy for keeping this alive and how much longer it can will be open for debate. Will the younger generation pick up the torch? I'll be looking at a lot of gear in the near future but without anyone (an engineer preferably like Randy) able to work on them I'll keep walking. My small stock of receivers Marantz 2270 and Sony STR7045 and Klipsch Bells will be with me in rotation till the end. Then my daughter can have them as she likes them. I think it's important to introduce this new generation to real music not coming from earbuds only then can this hobby stay alive.

Im afraid the same thing is happening at Mark Levinson/Revel. Samsung is or has ruined the brand.

I can remember when Kevin Voecks was at Snell and the people in charge over him were removed. He wrote "Ding-Dong the Witch is Dead...." Shortly thereafter he went on to create Revel. A thoughtful person but I lost track of him a long long time ago. I can remember when Madrigal (Levinson - Proceed) was purchased and that was all part of the Harmon Group. Dave Nauber moved onto Classe and I see that Glazer was over at Levinson/Revel. Samsung bought Harmon in 2017 and the real prize there was not the audio lines per se but rather the car audio lines where a lot more money was to be made. I remember hearing the early numbers for Levinson with Lexus and it was simply dumbfounding. So, I don't know much about the course of that bunch having disconnected from Levinson some years ago. They rather fell of the map here in the States. I have no clue what happened internationally. To see that Best Buy is selling them is rather interesting and about the furthest point from Madrigal days that I can see. So, yeah, appears so.

Seasonal variability in air pressure is around 1%, or around 10-12 mB, more pronounced at higher latitudes, almost nil closer to equator. (source Seasonal Variations in Atmospheric Pressure, Partial Oxygen Density, and Geomagnetic Activity as Additional Synchronizers of Circannual Rhythms). Variability due to tidal pressure is around 3 mB (source: NOAA). Daily variation of high and low pressure systems is around 50 mB. So seasonal variability in air pressure is about 1/5 of daily. Ergo, if you need to adjust VTA, then in agreement with daily weather. This is a famous reductio ad absurdum to show the flaw in the original "argument". Second, air pressure has nothing to do with gravitational forces of stylus on groove. Even assuming you are right with the seasonal VTA changes (I also doubt that), the rational is completely baseless.

Well, thank you for all of your explanations. For those who want to experience the difference, simply try it. As the air grows colder, it becomes more dense. So, I'll go with your criticism to some extent but I am not taking about gravity at all but how we hear.
