Works great. Have a new valve coming, rheem is still warranty these valves as of 12/22/2024 but this will keep me going until new valve comes in. Just curious if anyone has done this long term. Thanks

Thank you so much for this recommendation. It helped me understand the issue. I used the paperclip approach (kzbin.info/www/bejne/lajMYXiPfdVlmcU) to get hot water until I wait to receive the replacement from Rheem!
@MrZix447 күн бұрын
That is a non-resettable thermal fuse, set to blow at 91 degrees C. When they assembled the valve at the factory, they wrapped it in heat shrink tubing. Heat shrink tubing shrinks at 90 C. You can see how this would be a problem. Please, don't leave that disconnected, and get your valve replaced or repaired properly. That may work as a bypass/workaround, but please don't make it permanent

Did anyone use this as a long term fix, or is getting a new valve recommended? New gas valve was installed about 2 years ago. Tried this after my pilot light wouldn’t stay lit and it’s now working. Can I leave as is or is it a safety concern long term?
@zomborama14 күн бұрын
I would recommend getting a new valve especially since Rheem still seems to be replacing these for free. It's possible that this may be a permanent fix but I wouldn't risk it if you don't have to.

I read that the sensor indicates that the temperature is rising and shutdown the gas, which is stupid because if the pilot light goes out the temperature will drop not go up, and the sensor should then shut off the gas, it is setup backwards, the sensor is basically protecting the water heater from exploding from water pressure and heat, if so, what is the pressure relief valve for ?

My tank s.t.b. a few weeks ago. Been showering at my girlfriend's place etc. I've replaced the valve twice, neither worked. I wondered about the wires at the thermocouple. I decided not to mess with them as they had to send a signal to the valve. I tried a new thermocouple, and even another (I've seen too many new parts fail) and still nothing. I watched your video, the proof was right there. I took the wires out and now I can do dishes and shower and do laundry!! Thanks so much for posting this! I'm glad I was on the right track, but I'm even happier seeing you prove it. I'm on disability as it is. It's not a good retirement plan. I wasn't looking forward to buying a new tank. Thank you, thank you! Great work!!

The part in question is a non-resettable ECO (energy cut out) safety control. It is set for 196° and should not be removed or altered. Please do not promote bypassing ANY safety controls on any appliance. Doing so violates the UL listing of the product.

That white wire with sensor you took out is the sensor for water tank expansion. The sensor detects if the tank expanded beyond normal size from the pressure inside and shuts off the pilot to prevent the tank from exploding. It was a German technology and worked well in all Europe.

It's a high limit cutout thermal fuse, non reset. Known flaw. Fix is a proper (edit: 133 degree C) thermal fuse wrapped in Kapton tape. Do not use heat shrink. It will likely destroy the fuse. Fits inside tank probe. Or, in a pinch, a small wire nut to bypass a torched one for diagnostic purposes
