Please explain why the cloudy result is best, I would’ve thought if the water clears the gypsum is being absorbed into the soil? I’m guessing and I don’t really understand can you explain the science behind it ?thank you

Thank you! We recently bought a house with 2 established citrus trees. I've done my "prune for June" and noticed a LOT of these bumps. Hopped on here and realised they're gall wasp larvae... There's so much citrus around our neighbourhood that I'm sure a lot of people have this issue.

My Father taught me to drill the tiniest of holes in each gall, thus killing the larvae inside. He also taught me that gall actually tricks the tree into thinking it's sick, thus producing more growth and more lemons.

Devastated i have these problems in my dwarf potted citrus pots thanks for your advice

Hey, there is now better advice on treating this, check out other youtube vids. Some use potato peeler to expose the larvae but don't go all around the branch else you'll ring bark. Someone else spray with kaolin base product, which keeps insects at bay. I've not tried this so I presume if we have the nodes already then use the potato peeler method to kill existing larvae first and then spray at the appropriate time of the year to prevent wasp from laying eggs.

Open question for anyone to answer - Hi I’ve assessed my lime tree and it has a lot of gall wasp bulges. I need to cut off every branch and leaf to get it all. I’m guessing this is not ideal. So what are my options in this situation?

Thank you for this!!! my poor lime tree has been suffering for years. All the branches had been affected by the wasps so i've trimmed them off, cut the galls up, and they are now soaking in water to kill them off. My poor tree is looking very naked now :( I hope it will survive winter. I hope the wasps also wont come back. I really hope i've done the right thing by my tree :/ can you tell i'm worried! hahha

So if I was to burn the galls in a fire pit out back would that be a good way to dispose of them or will they come to life because of the heat and run?

My neighbours tree is 95% gall (only produces maybe 30 leaves each year and stopped fruiting YEARS ago) and is covering a lot of my property and has infected and killed my 2 small citrus plants which i was disappointed about but not bothering to replant anymore. Do you have a pamphlet that can help me express the importance of loping her tree? Or how the hell do I deal with the AMOUNT of branches I need to lop on my side of the fence at least. I'd need 30 buckets!

P.s. Having read further, I am now exposing gall wasp infection with potato peeler, then coating it with calcined kaolin/petroleum jelly (67%/33%). The theory is kaolin dries out the infection whilst the petroleum jelly stops the rain from washing kaolin away. My trial is in Adelaide, hope it works :-). (To get small amounts of kaolin, enquire your local ceramics/potter group)

Hello Kaye, For large branches that are difficult to prune, does scrapping to expose gall wasp nest (to the drying effects of wind, as shown on deepgreenpermaculture.com/2017/04/10/controlling-citrus-gall-wasp/) work? Thanks.

How’s Melbourne’s gall wasp situation going? Is there some sort of spray yet to tackle this annoying issue? I’m keeping on top of pruning & disposing the affected branches of my lemon & lime trees, but if the neighbors don’t look after their trees, I’m fighting a loosing battle😫 Thanks for your info😁

Hi there, I have a small lime tree in a pot I have had it for years and it used to give me a lot of fruit, nothing this year and recently noticed the galls and all these little brown spots on the branches. So I have pruned a lot of the infection off but my poor little tree is full of galls. I'm afraid there won't be much left once I prune off all the galls. My question is should I wait till autumn considering it's mid summer to prune it all and hopefully regrow from scratch as I said there won't be much left. :( Or should I just do it now? Thank you!
@ivolol6 жыл бұрын
The galls come out in spring, so you can do whatever you like till then. If you did lighter branches in summer it might have had time to grow some new clean ones, and then in the autumn/winter you can do more major pruning when the tree is dormant.

I have gall on the very thick main branch. I dont want to cut this branch ( about 40mm diameter ). Should I just attempt to saw off the gall ( size about the size of a thump? )

What is your opinion of gall wasp traps.the sticky type from bunnings.
@ivolol6 жыл бұрын
Pruning to destroy the wasps is preferable, but if you have a branch which really can't be pruned you could substitute the tape instead.

Hi Kaye, do you advise both cutting through the gall and submerging the galls in water to drown them?
@saveourcitrusmelbourne32168 жыл бұрын
Hi - yes if you have a few galls its good to cut through as many as possible. But the submersion in water will kill them too if you miss any galls - good luck!
@saveourcitrusmelbourne32166 жыл бұрын
Hi Maverick - the main thing is to submerge them this completely drowns the wasps

If I prune in June, am I not then risking frost damage to the trees? (refer 'when to prune' at www.organicgardener.com.au/articles/making-citrus-cut Should I only prune out the galls or do a full prune now? My dilemma is that my citrus trees are starting to peak in terms of fruit output.
@saveourcitrusmelbourne32168 жыл бұрын
Hi Cam - just prune out the galls now while the wasp is still dormant

Thank You, Kaye for this helpful video. It's nice of Shivervision to donate their services for a good cause but any 12 year old would help you improve the sound by using an extension microphone to record your commentary at a decent volume and then using any editing software to bring it up to a broadcast standard. It's pointless to use those sound effects and then have your vocal sound so quiet!

Looking forward to the talks! Great explanation of wasp cycle! I have an ancient lemon tree, feeds us all year with fruit and the neighbourhood ! But is infected,as are all the citrus trees in Coburg/Moreland! I treat mine....but as you say, if others do not...its till spreads!
