I grew up on a council estate in the 70s north east England and Dutchys as we called them where all the rage. We had a school playing field behind our houses and these lethal toys used to go some distance. There was lots of different methods and styles and I found the best materials were bamboo about 15 in long with a cross cut on the top for your home made flight and a pointed weighted end and shoe lace for throwing. Great fun and great memories

We kids made them in the 1950 s! Bamboo canes from the 'Oil-Shop', playing cards or pigeon feathers as flights , & for tips we used bullets from the army rifle range that we melted the lead out of then crimped the hollow point on our arrows, (Dutch arrows & arrows for bows) !

as kids we made weapons of all types, our dutch arrows were made with a wooden dowl of about 5 feet long, we used crow feathers for flights, and a spoon that we put on the railway line to get flattened out for the pointed end, and sharpen the spoon on a stone, we used copper wire to fix flight and arrowheads, the leash was paracord with a leather lace for the hand, deadly up to 100 yards or more, they would burry into telegraph poles so deep they were hard to get out. go straight through solid wood doors, this was about 1969,

Such good memories. I remember around 1980 my best friend made his using a piece of a fibreglass fishing rod, using the metal connector piece as natural weight for the front. With his good old council House strong arm he threw this thing and it went a ridiculous distance never to be see again. the best dutch arrow and throw i've ever seen.
