@@ChewingToons - He's merely talking about his own experience comparatively. I was there in the early 90s too...and Koh Phangan. The 60s & 70s obviously different, but the evolution of "trance" style parties from mid-80s through the mid-90s are when it was still good. It took a turn for the worse following '96...all over SE Asia. It was clear as day with each passing year, but the splintering of genres, and the perpetual increase in poorly traveled, self-important psytrance wankers....just destroyed what was beautiful about it. By the turn of the century it was all over IMO. The same could be said about dance music /rave / club culture, in general. It's incredibly sad. Not even the same universe, do these kids have the option of experiencing anywhere. Zero counterculture (unless pop social media counts).
@ChewingToons5 жыл бұрын
@@floordoctor Oh I agree with you totally. I still go to Goa most years but most of the 'younger' people that are travelling now just don't have the soul or that wanting to experiment. And you are right. The last real good year Ive had in Goa was 2001. Thailand about the same. People seem to care much more about themselves. They don't seem able to relax. Very plastic characters and most are up their own arses. I was talking to a few mates the other week and we were wondering just what the next youth subculture would be and we couldn't think of it. Each one going back to the 40s/50s had their own music,style,dance and drugs and each of those things are important to it. We might be the last of a dying breed.
@floordoctor5 жыл бұрын
@@ChewingToons - Yeah man, it'll all gone pear shaped. I only go to Thailand to DJ these days. I thought it'd come full circle, but now I get booked more just in the House music circles in Bangkok, & Phuket, then Malaysia/ Bali....whereas before it was all about the techno / acid in the 90s..was playing everywhere down south, til the millennium, & I've always lived in the States. It's weird how folks were jazzed to have a DJ around from NYC (still vinyl back then), and were freaking out when I'd have records shipped if I was gonna be in the same area for awhile. I eventually lived in Bangkok couple years... '94-95, cuz it was central...and still largely untouched w/ proper music & skilled DJs. That said, by '96, the west of India (excluding Bombay), was now straight trance cult. lol. No one wanted anyone taking their shine, including guys like Gil. Not gonna name drop a couple of the DJs I was with, but let's just say...we thought we were gonna be desirable to play (would have done for free), but MFers were mad dogging us simply for having records with us. Being from the hood, we didn't exactly have that typical "look" or uniform either. lol A kid from Bombay rented turntables/mixer for us, and brought em down....but no one wanted us to use their sound system. I guarantee Laurent & Rudi would have been cool with it, but we couldn't get no love, even though some of our records were getting played there just a few years before. It became a strange place quickly. The people were lovely (most of them)...but certain cliques out there were evident, & def evolved into everything we see now. They fucked themselves essentially. Anyone who says it's still good...is a liar. Straight up.
@floordoctor5 жыл бұрын
@@ChewingToons Goa now?...forget about it....there probably isn't a more close-minded group of people musically. Polar opposite from when I was first there. Changed dramatically, and quickly. Straight up formulaic now. No surprise why Laurent stopped DJing by '94. The passion of digging & searching for music...& the eclectic musicality just all went away. These psytrance cult kids...I just wanna grab em by their stupid hair...& slap the pretentious self-righteousness out of them. The music plays a central role in social progress, & always has. No mixing of different socioeconomic groups anymore. It's a festival driven culture, and cost a lot of $ to participate. Thailand is an absolute shit show....which really saddened me, cuz that was like a second home for me. It's underground that made things so fantastic. Post Reagan & Thatcherism....it was an amazing time globally for dance music culture. The ban in UK hurt the rave thing, but not the clubs. Same thing happened here the US. I think being able to see it in its infancy gave us a certain fearlessness, which you don't have today whatsoever. It's completely rigid, ego driven, watered down, & commercialized. The 2nd gen millennials are better than the 1st (as far as being receptive, & wanting to learn the history), but it's gonna take awhile before the new age of removing social media & becoming more personally engaged will take hold. Until then, validation of what's "good" will come out of popularity & money. DIY is what made every scene thrive, & the underground community diverse / inclusive. What I think is happening is the psychedelic revival. As that becomes more engrained in the culture, & shitty pharmaceuticals/ coke take a back seat...it will help kids see the light.
