Hot Rod magazine February 1970 said the ingredients are all there, but it is not the supercar it might have been. They then went on to point out the changes they thought should be done to make it a true killer. Things like a better cam, transmission gear ratios needed to be changed. etc. It was equipped with the AMC performance cam upgrade, but they thought it needed a more radical cam. Standard rear gear ratio was a 3.54, but theirs had an upgrade 3.91 rear gear. Dealer rear gears up to a 5.00 were available. Thier's ran a 14.49 which they felt was respectable as it was inline with many other muscle cars at the time. But they felt with some minor changes it would be a much better car. Keep in mind a lot of time was lost to the non radial so called performance times available at the time. They had a hard time getting it to hook off the line and it even spun the tires in second and third gear.

In '75 & '76 a 100 mph speedometer was used instead of the previous 120 mph speedometer.
@paradiseroadrestorations
@paradiseroadrestorations 12 күн бұрын
I will have to look into that a little further. I looked at the gauge clusters I have in stock; I have one 74 cluster with a 100 MPH speedo and the 76 camera grain cluster is a 120MPH speedometer. I appreciate you pointing that out.

While I served in Vietnam I special ordered a new 72 Dodge Demon 340. Sure wish I still had the car! I ordered it in Gold leaf metallic (GY8) with automatic on floor, bucket seats and 3:55 gears. Bone stock turned the quarter mile in 14.4 seconds @ 100 MPH and was able to outrun GTO's and 383 roadrunners. On the car in this video, the hood paint is wrong. I had the performance snorkel hood option and it did not cover the whole hood.

Yes, you are correct about the hood paint. I mentioned that in the video, but this car isn't stock anyway.

Chrysler & Pontiac had some pretty wild paint back in that time period also. AMC had it going on with theirs! And you're right. They were underestimated. A buddy of mine had a blown Gremlin that was featured in a couple of different magazines back then that REALLY got attention wherever he went!👍

I did a video on Mopar's High Impact Paint ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2nSnYmXq6x_b5o ) and I really like several of those colors. Yeah, a Gremlin with a potent powerplant is definitely an attention grabber! Freiburger's Hemi Gremmie comes to mind.

I still have my 1973 Javelin AMX. I swapped the restrictive small port intake with the big port, Cast Iron, Rebel Machine intake. It made a noticeable difference over the stock intake. The 401 is a great running engine.

I would always joke about the Matador and Pacer being 2 of the ugliest cars ever made. Credit where it's due, The Rebel and the Javelin are totally respectable muscle cars.

This is the last year for the Rebel. The 1971 Matador was just a Rebel with different front grill and rear taillights. They did not get the ugly two door Matador coupe until 1974.

Lol! I had a 1969 swinger Dart as a teenager. Someone had turned it into a drag car. It had Tubbed rear wheels, a four speed, Ford rear end, and a 426 Hemi. Unfortunately, It also had no interior and no lights and a minimal wiring harness. Being a teenager in the early 80's of course I was never able to get it road legal and ended up selling it for $2500 in 1987 so someone got a Hemi for a real bargain.
