But jobs take so much time and there is no more energy for art! As a painter/ illustrator, i need to put in the hours in the painting! One hour a day is not even enough for the most basic sketch. I hate working in anything apart from my art. I just hate it. Im a lazy? No, sorry, i am extremely hardworking on my art. I wont play the puppet nor the robot of any idiotic company anymore.

I completed the Positive Psychology Specialization that you helped teach on Coursera in early 2019, a few years after I received my B.A. in Psychology from a college in California.

2:27 You never resented it because your psyche is split. You have a socially accepted multiple personality disorder that has come to pass as normalcy even though it’s a schizoid model. And you don’t value authenticity. You see work and its frameworks (business itself, your colleagues, and clients) as purely instrumental. You do not know the value of commitment that comes from the heart. You are two people and two modes of being in one body. That’s why society is full of people with mental health issues or ‘just’ general unhappiness.

I agree that when you CAN, when you Have the ressources to go towards curiosity, do it as much as you can. Unfortunately, a lot of people do not have materials, health, access, ... to ressources to go there. It is a privilege, also.

A couple of years ago my girlfriend invited me to watch this video, and it made so much sense that I got a job and eventually started writing my first book, which last year I published; now planning to write my second one. this video helped me so much, because it comes from a person with the right experience; advice that I could not take from my enviroment, and that I could not figure out on my own (I'm good at writing, not so much at oher things XD) Thank you, thank you! God bless. PS: excuse me for my English, not my mother toungue.

This video was so helpful, I have been struggling since I finished high school (7 years ago now) to find the “right career” and I didn’t graduate from college so I felt miserable about having just normal jobs (I’ve done a lot of them). I also have problems with just enjoying hobbies because everytime I find something I’m good at and that I like, I think that I should monetize it. But this video explains everything very clearly, so thank you so much. Her voice is so calming too!

Hobbies are pursued for personal enjoyment, jobs provide income, careers are long-term pursuits, and vocations are callings or deeply meaningful pursuits.

Beautiful in theory. In practice, it is necessary to spend so much time at work that at the end of the day we are too tired to devote to any vocation. We only live on weekends and holidays, because that's when we have time to dedicate to our vocation.

I came to say this. While I was working my survival jobs, my better off peers advanced. Perpetually exhausted and burnt out for years, I made it to the point where my art is my job. I would not recommend it to anyone.

I feel it’s because of the amount of Debt people now carry. We were fooled into thinking we need careers right away when we turn 18, so an entire generation took out gigantic lifelong loans. These loans require subservience to whatever career that was decided at 18 years old. If I could go back in time and tell my young self anything, it would be that universities are for careers only, and to take out the loans if I am sure about this career the rest of my life.

@@natalyagennadi4753I used to be a writer then quit. I had more money but I didn’t enjoy that life. My priority is a comfortable life, not more money. My comfort comes from writing every day. I can go hungry for a day, but I cannot go without writing for a day.

Completely not true. "Passion" is real. Our ordinary lives beat it out of us. But it is not hard to hold it and cherish it. And it has a lot more power than "curiosity," which one might view as another word for that which keeps us scrolling through our phones.

Making a career as an artist is almost impossible. 4 words to differentiate: 1. Hobbie 2. Job 3. Carreer 4. Vocation 1. You do it for pleasure. You do it to prove you're not a robot. Stake is 0. You don't have to make money out of it. You don't have to be famous for it etc. Do it anytime for fun. 2. Job. You have to have a job. That's the only one you really need. You need to pay your bills, we live in a materialistic world. Hardly anybody are only an artist, most of them had a job. You don't have to love it, do it for the money. But don't let it kill you. Your life can be outside your job. 3. Career. You don't have to have a career. A career is a job you love. You're putting your life into it. If you don't like your career. Quit and get a job. 4. Vocation. It is a calling. It's the voice of the universe. Nobody can give it to you but nobody can take it for you.

So defining Job, Career , Hobby and Vocation is not about passion or what you are good at, it is just about time and money?! Is this why a well-established actor/writer/dancer/choreographer/singer/director etc... makes more money from one job or what can be called a project than any "job" including teaching/building/handwork(plumbing etc..)/baking/office jobs/nursing - the list is too long makes in an entire year or more? Including any other so important and vital job that serves society/humanity to a large extent? What you are saying is totally inaccurate to state as information, perhaps this is your own experience or what your parents taught you as you were growing up. Art is an industry. Filmmaking and Music are multi-billion industries where hundreds, no, thousands of people get JOBS - creative jobs out of which they can make very high paying and self-rewarding careers. Tv - same thing. Theatre and Printing - same thing although to a less extent in this era but there was a time (Shakespeare's for example) it was the "money making" thing. What you said is only useful for startups who haven't got established yet , students or entry level artists. Professional artists work and live from art work alone, this is how they pay their taxes and feed their children. It is a difficult career to make YES, that is true. It could also be a vocation for some people, healing people can also be a vocation as well as a job (becoming a medical professional). But just like everything else in life with learning the right skills , persisting and having a good plan you reach your goal, whether it is becoming a singer and making an album or becoming the CEO of a renowned bank. And NO you don't have time for art and a job together. You can only do that for some time but not forever. If you do it forever than it is just a hobby that you don't have enough "know how" at to push it into the next professional level. Thanks for the insight anyway.
