I think vowels are key to mastering the American Accent. I know there is pitch, intonation, etc. But I believe vowels are fundamental and everything else is built upon them...At least that's how I see it.

Thanks for the explanations! I have deviated septum which the doctor said is on a scale 55/100. I can hardly breathe through one of my nostrils. So it seems a surgery is recommended. I was wondering if my voice would become fuller and more resonant, and potentially deeper, when this is corrected?

For many of them they can't get "rid of" it unless they train really hard to improve their accent. I'm dating a girl and she has that accent, although it doesn't bother me. I ain't in love with her hair or her voice, but her. If people make unpleasant comments about her accent it'd probably annoy me, but better off ignoring unless it's taken too far, of course. I'm not a guy who likes violence, anyway.

Yes, it's difficult to completely sound like a native if you learn your second language after about age 12, which is ok. Accents are cool! The most important thing is intelligibility -- you want others to be able to understand you. Some people may choose to work on sounding more American because they want to.

Please advise on your list of "sh" pronunciations carrying 27 words. 21 follows the "sion" principles, 4 follows the "sure" principles, leaving only -> " issue and tissue" which are both pronounced with comfort of the speaker.
@caroledgel5488
@caroledgel5488 2 ай бұрын
A lot of American pronunciations depend on 1) where the word originally came from -- the etymology, and 2) ease of pronunciation. When we have a long U after a consonant, Americans often change the pronunciation. In the case of 'issue' and 'tissue', we pronounce the 'ss' as 'sh', and usually we add a very slight 'y' sound in front of the long 'u'. So you will often hear 'tissue' pronounced like 'tishyoo' in American English.

My nose is nearly always clogged. I used to be. Hypernasal but when I was trying to fix it ny talking through my nose less I think I am now hyponasal. How do I fix this?
@clarityaccent
@clarityaccent 4 ай бұрын
If you are hyponasal now, it could be caused by something physically clogging your nasal passages. This could happen if you are congested from a cold, or if you have enlarged tonsils or adenoids. If you feel that it has just become a speech habit, then you can train yourself to speak differently by monitoring how nasal your sounds are. The sounds N, M, NG should be nasal-sounding. When a vowel is next to N, M or NG, it will be nasal sounding also. Put your finger on the side of your nose to feel how much vibration there is when you are producing those sounds. You may need to make adjustments to your tongue position, mouth opening and airflow to increase that vibration and resonance. Good luck!

Thank you for the lesson. Is the i in ing pronounced as a long e or a short i?
@clarityaccent
@clarityaccent 5 ай бұрын
The 'i' is pronounced as a long 'e'. You might hear some people get lazy and say something like "goin" (with a short 'i' and no 'ng') instead of "going", but the standard way to pronounce 'ing' is with a long 'e' followed by a nasal 'ng' sound.
@MrrrAdryan
@MrrrAdryan 6 ай бұрын
In Mandarin verbs aren't modified to to indicate past tense, I believe there is a suffix added to the verb to indicate past tense but in Mandarin for example, the word "go" isn't modified to what would be the equivalent of "went".. so this is the reason Chinese speakers learning English don't tend to modify verbs to the past tense, because it's not something they do in their language and this can be hard to learn for them to grasp. It is said like "I go to store yesterday". I don't know much more about it, but this is something I learned from a Chinese friend in college. I hope I am explaining this correctly. Also they don't use the plural form with nouns and they don't have articles (a, an, or the). Chinese is really interesting. To indicate more than one cat for example they would say "You have how many cat?" and to respond with how many you have you would say "I have two cat". Anyway, FLS is so fascinating to me because it's not only an accent change but a complete change in speech pattern. I would love to learn more about how and why these people's pronunciation and entire speech patterns have changed so drastically. It was fascinating for the French accent lady was talking about her frustration with not being about to pronounce words including her own name and her daughter's name. Speech is a huge part of one's identity and I want to understand more about how this affects FAS people's concept of their identity, etc and how speaking this new way has changed and affected them. Anyway, I'm loving these videos of yours breaking down exactly how their words and speech patterns have changed. Very interesting! Cheers!
@caroledgel5488

That explains why Chinese can be a difficult language to learn! And also why native Chinese speakers can be difficult to understand when they are new to speaking English. Not only are there speech sounds to master, but grammar concepts as well. And you are right, that's what makes FAS so fascinating -- where are these people picking up a completely different speech and language system? 😮

Hi, is there any non medical cure for hyponasality?
@caroledgel5488
@caroledgel5488 Жыл бұрын
That depends on the cause of your hyponasal speech. Hyponasal speech can be caused by physical problems, either temporary or permanent. For example, if you have a cold and your nose is stuffed up, that's a physical problem that may go away eventually. However, if your tonsils or adenoids are permanently enlarged, it may require surgery to notice a difference. If you have chronic hyponasal speech, you might want to check with an ENT (ear nose and throat) doctor rule out any physical causes. You can experiment with some speech techniques such as keeping your tongue higher and more forward than usual, or changing your pitch or volume to see if it helps your sound. However, if there is a physical blockage, it will be difficult to change hyponasal speech until this is corrected. 🙂

@caroledgel5488
@caroledgel5488 Жыл бұрын
It depends on what is causing your hypernasal speech. There might be physical structures that are not working properly, or you may have learned ways of speaking that cause you to sound hypernasal. Some languages are naturally more hypernasal, so switching to a less nasal language like English may require changing those habits to sound like a native. Since you have had surgery for a cleft palate, you would probably want to check with an ENT (ear nose and throat) doctor to rule out any physical causes. Some speech techniques you can try include: keeping your tongue lower and further back in your mouth than you currently do, keeping your mouth open a little more while you are speaking, and trying to speak with a different volume or pitch to see if that helps. 🙂
