They are brilliant aren't they. Always a joy to see one, there is one at the DMU depot in Inverness. They can trace their lineage back to the initial batch of shunting locos to this basic design made by LMS in the late 1940s. They look like they are from that era with the cab design and the connecting rods. Even the whistle is a toot instead of the two tone br thing. The fact that they are still in use shows how right the early design was.

Don’t change a classic - there a a reason it’s always loco plus a rack of coaches - they can change the formation to fit demand now dow 😅

Splendid video! It's so cool to see the Class 08 diesel shunters still soldier on. It's interesting to think that they were first built in the steam era shortly after the original Great Western ceased to exist and now, in 2024, there's at least one working on the modern Great Western Railway wearing that railway's livery.

@@ashthemainman I remarked to the train man on the platform some years about the station being so big with so few trains, and he replied , “ ah but you should see it when it gets busy”. Yes eight trains an hour😂😂 .I guess it was much busier in the days of steam. A tiny place like Ryde St Johns Road has four trains an hour. Thanks for sharing.🙏

These locomotives are the stuff of legend. Designed and built in 1952 and 72 years later they are still doing the same job with nothing to compare it to for shunting and slow moving. They can move 1000 tons on the level and reliable. Great to see them keep up the hard work.

@@ashthemainman It was built as a BR Class 08, I mean.

@@CoffeePot31 the confusion is the current branding on the great western- being called great western railway rather than before first great western - if you know what a Class 08 is you know this is British Rail Made. So if this was a freight liner Class 08 that’s all you would say.

By that logic a class 800 you see at Plymouth is NOT GWR but is Hitachi - its ofc both - Livery/operator vs manufacturer
