Why has a heat pump got to have high flow rates? Why not slower flow rates and a wider delta t?

@davidboyle5761

An incomplete explanation. 1. How is the heat loss from the house calculated? 2.The larger the house the greater the heat loss. The heat loss can only be measured empirically when there is a large difference in external and internal temperature. This would be carried out using an infrared camera. 3. Present your case with a real world example, eg a 150m2 detached residence, calculate the uvalues for the walls and roof. There is a business for an architectural practice to carry out this work. I believe that The University of Salford (or Manchester) have built a full size test lab for this work.

How does the Daikin heatpump maintain a water temperature of over 3 degrees during a holiday mode? The heatpump isn't operational during this time for say 1 month then does the daikin heatpump run as soon as the water temperature goes down?

If you need a backup heater, You picked the wrong refrigerant. Inverters can throttle from 15% TO 100% The information in this video is false. Design your heat pump system for the coldest days of the year. Eliminate the gas hookup to your house and you will save money every year.

Hello.. i got a question. I got my WD curve type set to slope offset. And i set the setpoint range (min and max temperature)..and after synchronising i dont see setpoint range menu entry anymore and i think there were other menu entries there also that are now missing. How do i get them back?..If somebody knows maybe. Best regards

I disagree with the reasons for not using glycol. I agree it lowers the efficiency of the heat transfer. Glycol is slightly slippery so it will lubricate the pipes and water immersed bearings inside the pump. I would add glycol in a SMALL amount for lubrication purposes only AND add anti freeze valves. Best of heat transfer VS longevity of the system. Anti freeze in an internal combustion engine does two things. It stops the engine furring up and lubricates the pump. If you run the engine without antifreeze the pump will seize eventually never mind damage from freezing. Heat pump engineers are obsessed with efficiency figures over safety of the system. Changing glycol/inhibitor is a schedule service item and should not be avoided.

The main issue with heat pumps is inflexibility. The system needs to be tailored exactly for the individual house, but then, when you for example get new windows with better insulation, the heat pump effectively becomes 'oversized' for the load. If you decide to stick on a small extension/conservatory etc, suddenly your heat pump can be very much undersized for the load. The issue is, you are not just throwing in a new £1500 Gas boiler to compensate, you are looking at a minimum of £5k to get a new tailored pump. Heat pumps are a 20 year investment, but life changes along the way and the HP system is just a little inflexible, imho.
@JohnnyMotel99
@JohnnyMotel99 11 ай бұрын
If the HP becomes oversized for any reason, why not reduce the flow temp and increase the SCOP.
@jimmaxwell2259
@jimmaxwell2259 11 ай бұрын
@@JohnnyMotel99 Because, that change of circumstance has occurred long after the installation and 'joe bloggs' wont know either how to change the flow rate or heat curve. Depending on oversizing, the heat pump might not go 'down' low enough to maximise the potential efficiencies. Few homeowners are even remotely interested in how their system works...they just want it to work. With Gas boilers, you have a much greater tolerance to changes. Inefficient HP can be extremely costly. Doesn't have the same latitude for mistakes. ps i love the idea of properly installed heat pumps.

I know I am going to get some push back here but hear me out. In places like Canada it can be -40C for weeks. And as amazing as this technology is getting, at those temperatures you may as well be throwing credit cards into the fireplace for the energy loads. What if we could provide a passive seasonal heat source to work with that is MUCH hotter? You can store a lot of energy in 3 yards of sand at 500F for a very long time. And all of it can come from excess renewable. Think of it as a piggy bank for a dump load, instead exporting to the grid for peanuts.

they do exist, your sand batteries, just with more effective materials.

Sounds to me like you just need a better heat pump or need to work with a better installer. I live where it gets below -20C 20 days out of the year. Back up heat only needs to come on less then 50% of the time when it gets that cold.

You might want to hire a consultant if you don’t trust your contractor to optimize your configuration and the thermostat controls etc, Then set it and forget it There are quite a few videos on KZbin that show you the math and studies of real world users who run them right or run them wrong and the impacts of those choices in terms of costs, efficiency and comfort.

Great video!! Does this apply to inverter technology compressors with variable speed condenser fans, ECM indoor motors & communicating thermostats? I’v gone to several manufacturers classes and what they teach is that with the configuration I mentioned the equipments will self adjust to the load due to constant communication between the outdoor temp, indoor temp & desired set point. The system has programmed algorithms to compensate. I’m working on units that vary the loads between 15% to 100% load. Perhaps your talking about single stage compressors?

Thanks, this confirms my thinking that undersizing need not be a big problem if heat loss can be reduced further with more insulation in due course - if I’m not mistaken the usual temperature used to calculate heat loss is -3C which happens for maybe a couple of weeks in the year as has happened recently - if that’s true then for the majority of the year the HP would technically be oversized so erring on the side of smaller isn’t as bad as oversizing…

Good morning Do you know what these heat pumps will modulate down too? We installed the 9KW version instead of the another daikin 7KW our installer advised us to install due to aesthetics(we liked the look of these ones). Our heat load at -2 is 5KW just wondering if this being oversized would effect its COP?

Hi, you mention not to cover valve body with insulation. I understand the air admittance point but the valve design/construction must be some form of thermo-mechanical device. So what happens if the temperature drops rapidly, the valve starts to dribble but becomes frozen shut or partially open? This is a common problem with condensate outlets for condensiing boilers - little white plastic tube frozen sold with water thgus blocking the outlet for further condensate disposal. Also, what provision should be made for disposing of that ejected water? You dont say what the volume might typically be?
