Roosevelt decided to go before Congress the next day to report on the attack and ask for a declaration of war. In early evening, he called in his secretary, Grace Tully. "Sit down, Grace," he said. "I'm going before Congress tomorrow, and I'd like to dictate my message. It will be short." 2 Short it was. But it was to become one of the most famous speeches of the twentieth century, giving birth to one of the most famous phrases of the century. "Yesterday, December seventh, 1941, a date which will live in world history," he began as Tully took down the words, "the United States was simultaneously and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan." 3 Biographer Nathan Miller recalls: "He inhaled deeply on his cigarette, blew out the smoke, and began dictating in the same calm tone he used to deal with his mail. He enunciated the words incisively and slowly, carefully specifying each punctuation mark and new paragraph. Running little more than five hundred words, the message was dictated without hesitation or second thoughts.

Eighty two years ago tomorrow, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt delivered to the Congress a petition that the Congress issue a formal declaration of war against the Empire of Japan. Our nation was at that time under direct attack by Japanese forces. Today, we recall the spirit of that day, that though America is under no such overt threat of attack or destruction, we seek to prevent the same with the following declaration -- HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION Declaring that a state of war exists between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Government and the people of the United States and making provisions to prosecute the same. Mr. Vice President, and Mr. Speaker, and Members of the Senate and House of Representatives: Yesturday, December 7, 1941 a date which will live in infamy the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. The United States was at peace with that Nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its Government and its Emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific. Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American Island of Oahu, the Japanese Ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack. It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time the Japanese Government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace. The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu. Yesterday the Japanese Government also launched an attack against Malaya. Last night Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong: Last night Japanese forces attacked Guam. Last night Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands. Last night the Japanese attacked Wake Island. And this morning the Japanese attacked Midway Island. Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our Nation. As Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense. But always will our whole Nation remember the character of the onslaught against us. No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory. I believe that I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us. Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory, and our interests are in grave danger. With confidence in our armed forces with the unbounding determination of our people we will gain the inevitable triumph so help us God. I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese Empire.

If Pearl Harbor had happened in 2023, I doubt that Republicans and Democrats in Congress would even have the self awareness or respect to do what was necessary and put all their petty bickering and political maneuvering aside. Neither Biden nor Trump would have gotten applause like this, I know that. We need to get the state of our political discourse back under control before it divides us so much that we end up unable to act in the face of an existential threat to our Democracy. First and foremost, we need to choose better nominees in the primaries. Donald Trump was the worst republican candidate they could have chosen because he's an unstable, pathological liar who will say or do anything to protect his self image. Biden was the worst the democrats had to offer because he's like 120 years old and can barely even speak anymore. Democrats only voted for Biden because they thought he stood the best chance of beating Trump as a former Vice President. Republicans voted for Trump because they were frustrated with establishment politics and wanted to make a statement. Call and response, back and forth. And every go around causes the divide between us to grow a little wider. This has to stop.

@christopherbrochu-r8z Жыл бұрын
@@MarkHarrison733 This isn't entirely accurate. The action you refer to involved the destroyer USS Niblack, which was rescuing survivors from a Dutch freighter sunk by U-boats. A U-boat was seen approaching destroyer, so the destroyer drove the U-boat off with depth charges. In the circumstances, it was safe for the captain of the Niblack to assume the U-boat had hostile intentions. USS Niblack wasn't actively seeking German vessels to attack, and its actions were not unprovoked. Roosevelt didn't order a shoot-on-sight order until September 1941, after U-boats attacked the destroyer USS Greer. (USS Greer wasn't damaged, but it returned fire and damaged the U-boat.) This was a rational decision; a German vessel had fired on an American vessel without provocation. U-boat attacks in September and October 1941 damaged two US vessels (destroyer USS Kearney and oiler USS Salinas) and sank a third (destroyer USS Reuben James). This is consistent with what I said - there was action between US and German naval vessels before war was declared. Nearly all such action involved convoy defense, and the U-boats usually fired first. That does not, in any way, mean the US "wanted" war. Roosevelt wanted to join on the side of the western allies, but congressional opposition - remember, it's Congress that declares war - sharply limited Roosevelt's ability to help the UK. Seriously - if the US, as a whole, wanted war, we'd have jumped in after the USS Panay incident in late 1937. We didn't because Congress prevented Roosevelt from ordering retaliation.

I'm from Italy. Not everyone wants to tear you down. I'm 10000% pro America. Liberty was lost in continental Europe in 1941, America restored it. Wherever US armies arrived, liberty was restored; wherever US armies did not arrive, liberty was not restored. If there is still liberty in the world, it is because America has been defending it for almost 80 years. I owe America my freedom. All the damn morons trashing America around the clock should either emigrate to Russia, China and North Korea or shut the fuck up.
