This is very cool! You're not limited to the fields provided by your sim. I wonder if this would work with Realflight. Sim makers should add this feature (for those of us not tech savy enough to do it on our own)
@MoritzWeller22 күн бұрын
thanks for commenting! as long as the sim provides full 3D environments (necessary for FPV flight for example), it should be possible to do something similar with realflight and other simulators. as my approach requires custom geometry matching my room, it cannot be easily implemented for everybody like this. but there are also native apps on the Quest like Liftoff: XR Drone which offer a similar experience for small quadcopters and the information for the room geometry comes from the headsets ability to scan the room boundaries (and the user adding additional objects like tables etc)

Do you know how much these go for? I can't really find information on the price online but I have the chance to get one used right now
@MoritzWellerАй бұрын
Depends heavily on the model and electronics and also condition of the model. Also 1,5m is a difference to 1m. Unfortunately, most CFK DLGs are pretty price intensive and quickly are way upwards above 600-700 bucks. GFK models are a bit cheaper. This one is an older one on which I got lucky due to the original owner offering it for a very fair price.

Thank you for leaving a comment! The TX16s really is a nice transmitter to start out with! And I love the Arctus for the performance it gives me, especially since I got it used for a great price. I'm thirsty for even more floaty models now, as I noticed the difference in wing cube loading between the MD2 and the Arctus 😄 This was a jump from a WCL of 3.6 to 2.6 which feels like a really big difference!

@@MoritzWeller "This was a jump from a WCL of 3.6 to 2.6 which feels like a really big difference!" Could you explain this further, because I don't really understand.
@MoritzWeller3 ай бұрын
@@goldenfish77 look for YT videos covering Wing Cube Loading. It's a much more helpful value than the classical wing loading (g per dm²), since it takes the size of the plane into account which makes a HUGE difference. you can't compare wing loadings between different wing spans at all exactly because of that. WCL makes different wing spans comparable. tailheavy productions and dagtheaviator have videos covering the topic. also look at this: www.rccad2vr.com/aeronautics/wing-cube-loading

I like this open field and you are flying well - anything above one minute is finding lift - I have no experience with a 1m ship and they seem to be very lively in flight - you will love 1.5m birds!
@MoritzWeller4 ай бұрын
Thank you for the compliment! I think I still have to learn a lot! In these early flights it feels like I'm learning something with every launch. I also have the impression that 1m DLGs are a bit tricky compared to a 1,5m ship (and it's quite a sport in this heat to keep them up with little experience in finding thermals), but they are a bit less daunting to start out with. I already got my hands on to 2 1,5m models which I need to get into a flyable state, but so far the MD2 is a great model for starting out! A bit of repair is needed before the next flight, which is another thing I'm learning a lot about these days. 😄👌 Really looking forward to flying 1,5m too though!

Wow, very nice high launch! Great turnings in the thermal. As I see, has your glider some damages. My rudder was also a bit crippled during a windy landing. What is that little gray square on the top side of the elevator? You inspire me to take a visit on a flat field with my MD2. Bravo!
@MoritzWeller4 ай бұрын
Thank you! The launch was actually not that high by any standards I think. 23.4m if I hear the callout correctly. I’m not really pushing for super high heights either, but trying to improve my technique bit by bit. Yes, the model already has a few blemishes, especially the paint on the leading edge appears to come apart quickly. Right wingtip and especially tail rudder need proper repair soon, tail rudder before next flight even. The square on the elevator is my printed label with my eID (legal requirement) combined with a QR code which leads to a small landingpage with my contact data in case of a flyaway so any finder is able to contact me by scanning the code with a smartphone.

I'm sitting on more footage, yet have to decide on what to pack into the next video/videos 😁 Also I need more time for editing which is hard between working, flying and sleeping 😄

@MoritzWeller4 ай бұрын
Thank you! I'm still very much a beginner in throwing, but it feels really nice! I try to stay mostly gentle in the power I put into my throws so I don't really reach very high heights (I think only 27m was my highest yet), but I don't think this is something I have to focus this early on anyways. I made a mistake on one launch causing disbalanced stress on the wing so the foam core gave way and the peg started moving / losening up a bit inside the fragile wing, but I already fixed it with a syringe and a bit of epoxy and seems to hold up very well now after the repair.
@goldenfish774 ай бұрын
@@MoritzWeller Nice, I think your large flying field is very suitable to practise launching. You can looking for thermals above that large area. @@goldenfish77 thank you! this place was a lucky find when i originally wanted to try out a different field. the problem might become that this one is privately owned to commercially grow grass to sell on rolls (e.g. for sport fields, gardens, etc) so i am still looking for other flying areas as well since I'm not sure the owner would be so happy i use his property. he probably also would say no if i ask him. i live very close to the city, so it really is a struggle for me as well to find something with good size which is not too far away and i want to avoid driving / cycling long distances if possible, too.

The very first clip in this video was my first flight with this model 😄 I had to tweak the launch mode up elevator and mostly did gentle launches while dialing in the settings. 😄 The spot is famous for slopesoaring, but this day was pretty calm and wind from the wrong direction (south instead of west) so a good 2 min 15sec were the maximum i was able to reach that day.

It's indeed a real feather! It's been designed for a specific sub 40 gram competition category. Makes it very susceptible to wind, but on calm days it (as Josh Finn reports) can even pick up on thermals, so watch out on that one, especially if you have limited space when flying it. I'm in the process of converting one of mine to RC so I can keep control over it...
