I have stopped storing fuel in plastic containers, you are quite right in only keeping it 3 months, in my experience 3 months in Tropical Queensland, it is starting to go off. If you store it in steel Jerry cans, German army style and kept full, it lasts 12 months plus and is still good to go. I think steel jerry cans seal better and exclude oxygen and moisture from the fuel, which to me seem to be a cause of fuel deterioration. Over here you only have to leave a plastic fuel container out in the sun for a very short time and they swell up like footballs and then shrink when cool. This was what made me change to Jerry cans. They were designed to cope with that. Also a little 2 stroke oil helps stabilize fuel, Thanks for your video, was informative.

I’ve just bought a motorbike which has sat in a garage for 15 years and hasn’t run in that time. I put a fresh battery on it and it started and ran no problems with the petrol that was in it. The petrol looked absolutely horrendous and it smelt as stale as hell. I was really surprised that the motorbike actually ran as well as it did with 15 year-old petrol in it.

Do you use gas without methanol? That’s the key. No methanol gas. Real gas. That’s what’s best.

Because it's fine, it's not that long. Alcohol in today's gas absorbs water too. Most people don't know that. Today's engine are designed to run on today's gas.

I'm 70 and all of my engines work fine all of the time by following one simple rule, empty all gas from my engines (lawnmowers outboards chainsaws, etc) in the fall or not in use for any length of time. put fresh gas in when you want to use it. If there's no gas in the engine to go bad then there's no problem

H, I, WorkbenchZ, I have got coleman 400A. whenever I use it , yellow flame appear at the bottom of generator bracket and I blow it to extinguish often. could you tell me how to fix it please ?
@workbenchzАй бұрын
Without seeing it, I can only make a guess: the gas tip might be leaking where it attaches to the generator tube, and a new generator might fix it. With the bracket off watch (but don't light) the fuel to see where fuel is coming from, if it is dripping from the gas-tip/tube joint, or dripping out the burner box assembly.

Did you just hit that intake valve with a frozen stick of butter? LOL. Glad you got 'er running again. Little tough to tell from the video but where you peened around the valve seat looks REALLY close to the seat. Like almost on the edge of the seat. If I'm seeing that right, you don't need to be that close for future repairs, FYI. The KZbin algorithm brought me here for whatever reason so I'm gonna go back and watch Part 1 but I'm guessing the motor got overheated and that's the real reason the seat worked out in the first place. [edit] Yeah, no, now I see how you got yourself in a twist. You had the right idea in the first vid but once you caught the mistake you had already loctited and peened the seat in place not fully seated. I guess you recovered from that the only way you could from that point forward. I would probably have done the same, just with more cursing.
@workbenchzАй бұрын
The cussing didn't make the final edit, and I see it now, the scrap of maple does look like butter 😆. I regretted the loctight when I had to try to undo my mistake, I'm still undecided if it would have been a good idea had I done it right in the first place. I'm still pondering overheating being the cause. The exhaust valve seat has never come loose, and I would expect overheating the block would pop both out. Also there are dozens of other videos on this same engine with the exact same intake valve seat issue but not the exhaust seat. In this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZmrOoaB8Z9VrnrMsi=zvYz8GGKMNrPhMmw I used a spring loaded punch to peen around the seat. My peens with the punch and hammer just followed the previous ones and yes they are very close.

You’re a man after my own heart, when it comes to getting that fuel out of those generators. I’ve had no problems with my generators since I started doing this myself. Only thing I do extra to ensure quick final evaporation of any remaining gasoline let’s put the generator in the sun with the cap off and the fuel shut off open. I’m sure if this final step is actually necessary or not. Both my generators started perfectly with recent storms, both had not been started in just over three years.

I am right there with you. I have fixed all my mowers except for one Craftsman with a Tecumseh engine that lacks compression now to start, or is out of time. The problem is that the crankshaft does not have a timing mark. I think I followed the correct timing procedure in such a situation, but regardless the motor lacks compression when TDC. I am not giving up, way too much invested in this project. I will return to it when time permits.
@workbenchzАй бұрын
I really liked my previous Craftsman Tecumseh engine lawnmower. Keep trying, there are lots of videos on KZbin about diagnosing cam shaft and compression issues. That's one of the reasons I put up the failure video, and the success video (just posted); to encourage folks to keep trying.

Should use only non-ethanol fuel also. Using ethanol fuel will attract moisture--whether empty or full--and cause rust.
@workbenchz2 күн бұрын
It's a mixed bag. Ethanol holds the moisture in suspension better, remember "Dry Gas" additive was just alcohol. But it can allow oxide formation on the brass jets to happen in a shorter amount of time. If you drain it dry after each use it doesn't matter which fuel you use.
@frugalprepper2 ай бұрын
I don't drain the tank. It will rust. I keep it full and then drain the fuel out once a year if I don't used it, and change it with fresh fuel, and burn the old fuel in my car. When running the carb dry, when it starts to die flip on the choke and it will suck the last of the fuel out of the bowl.
@workbenchzАй бұрын
Interesting idea to use the choke to get the last few drips (01:48) out, I'll have to try that next time, thank you.

That's what I do. 15 years same Generac. Each spring I use the Generac fuel in the lawn tractor and replace the fuel and stabilizer. Change the oil and spark plug. I test start it about monthly. I loose power about 2 to 4 times a year, a couple times for week plus. Id rather have it ready to pull and go than have to fill it and crank the crap out of it to get the fuel to the carb. Not getting any younger!

I really liked your video. Very thorough explanations, the spacer for the gas tank assembly, spot on, I had an extra piece left over.🤭 Scotty C. has a video very similar, with the exception, he removed the exhaust cover, and adjusted the valves, before reseating the valve seat. His video wasn’t quite as detailed as yours. Because you did this last year, do you think this extra step might be part of the solution, to not having to repeat this again? I checked out your channel, some neat projects, I’m subscribing! Good job!👍👍👍

If the fan speed only works in number 4, that would be a bad resistor pack, a little black electrical box that the wires to the fan connect through.

Thanks. This worked out great for me. Another thing I did was buy a 20pack of 2oz plastic jars with lids (1.97" round x 1.97" deep). I put one in each cubby-hole for the small parts because I was concerned that disc-shaped attachments would sneak out of their bin between the lid and yellow divider walls while carrying the case or flipping it upside down. Plus I have some OCD with loose parts bouncing around. Now I don't have to worry and they were only about $9. Lastly the round jar shape works well in the rectangular shaped compartments because it allows for your fingers to easily get in and remove the jar.

I recently purchased a used 533. I pressurised it and opened the valve to see if I could hear the air hissing. I couldn’t. Everyone on KZbin said that the only issues with this lantern is the generator, so I took off the generator and flushed it out and it seems fine. Put the generator back on and tried again. Got nothing. It’s appears that the fuel is not reaching the generator. Any ideas ?
@workbenchz7 ай бұрын
A few basic troubleshooting ones: 1. Is it holding pressure when you pump it up and when you open the fuel cap you hear air hiss out? Sometimes the check valve at the bottom of the pump gets grit in it and it gets stuck shut or open. 2. Remove the generator tube, pressurize it and open the valve and see if you hear the air hiss out the valve itself. 3. The cleaning wire, pushed all the way into the tube, blocks the jet so that turning off the stove extinguishes the flame immediately. Blow through the generator tube with the wire pushed all the way in and no air should flow. Pull the wire back some and when you blow through it some air should flow thorough the tube. The valve might not be retracting the cleaning wire far enough. On mine the eyelet was a tad stretched, bigger than a 90°, wasn't pulling the wire back far enough, and bending it back to a little bit sharper angle than 90° fixed that.
