What happened to Bolton was " Greater Manchester " a pitiful days work from which this proud town never recovered. Biggest town outside the cities ( Jessica Lofthouse in her Lancashire books 1971) now a pitiful huge shadow and parody of its former self. Local paper prints a " Looking Back" section every Weds. The comparisons bring a tear to your eyes. Awful.

All the retail relocated on the Robin Park Shopping Centre. The actual town centre is depressing. King Street had all the night clubs that was decades ago. There was policing at one time and then stopped funding. I remember the area became notorious for sometime and then died off. This could be a generational thing, or the licensing became governed by the council and not the police that use to grant the licence. Therefore, there is a lot in that to do with saturation and venue types. Wigan is my birthplace but I've lived in various parts of the country. There are other places looking worse and it's fair to say the presant state of the country (social economics). However, the heritage and Haigh Hall I'm not really interested with that. Infact it would be better flattered and modernised. That's my opinion and really it's all appealing to one sector and its inverted... young people will not want to live here. There is nothing really for them.
@andrewemmerson
@andrewemmerson 2 күн бұрын
Very interesting about the funding issues, I don’t personally think that retail parks should be allowed unless they are properly connected to the town and accessible by foot, otherwise they will always take trade from the high street.

Quite a lot of incorrect information here. The road you're driving down within the first few minutes was originally "Long Lane", the ORIGINAL route to South Hawes/Southport from Scarisbrick Bridge. The Kew gardens station was on a totally different line, long gone. No part of Meols Cop Park (it is Blowick, not Kew) formed any part of Kew Gardens. Kew Gardens was accessed from The Alexandra Hotel, now the site of The Richmond Pub. The site closed in the early 1930s. Canal??? That is Fine Janes Brook!!! 🤨

Thank you some interesting points there, I will need to look into those and check it. The railway station to Kew Gardens, was in the centre of what’s now B&Q, I never knew where the entrance to the gardens was, as was difficult to find out. 👍
@SecretSandLand
@SecretSandLand 3 күн бұрын
@@andrewemmerson unsure why my first reply has been removed... but anyway... I am fully aware that Kew Gardens station stood where B&Q is however, the vast majority of the road you drove down follows the course of a lane that is many centuries old, it is how the North Meols parish centre (Churchtown) was accessed from the east, and prior to what is now the course of Norwood Ave/Meols Cop Rd being constructed c1818, it formed part of the route taken to South Hawes/South Port from Scarisbrick Bridge. It did not form part of the railway line. A small section of the line (long gone) ran adjacent to the road now serving B&Q. Feel free to check any of my social media content regarding Southport history, it is all bona fide and fully researched/referenced. 👍

Don’t know if my previous message was through to you Andrew, but really love your Southport videos My message didn’t seem to register I went to KGV sixth form as a girl , when the old boys school was still there crumbling on Scarisbrick rd. I remember the Sands Pub at Ainsdale being open, and Toad Hall by the dunes in Ainsdale which a few years ago an artist painted with lizards or natterjack toads. Apparently according to one of my elderly neighbours about 25 years ago - related to me that Bedford Park when she was a girl was sand dunes She would have been born around 1900

i was treated to a birthday meal there, not impressed with the meal at all, then i had a £60 fine for using their car park, not well sign posted, no information or help at reception as to registering your car on arrival or terms of stay. it is the worst experience i have had when treated to a meal. you could not drag me to this place with a team of wild horses.

The food was revolting and there was some sort of cheerleading competition going on, although they had not informed her that it would coincide with her wedding. Brittania is a parasitic hotel chain. They only survive by housing imported deviants and when the imported deviants trash their rooms which they do 100% of the time, the taxpayer funds the refurb. Rinse and repeat
