Last proper Rolls-Royce with a BMW engine? The last proper Rolls-Royce is the new Silver Spur of 1997

You lost me when you said this V12 is a better engine than the Rolls V8.....by no measure is this a better engine, the V8 was in production for over 40 years...for a reason!......

Excellent review and history summary. I can't agree on the looks though - I just think there is something so wrong about the front side lights and also the rear lights. I do completely agree the Turbo RT is the one to have though. I would be interested on your view of the ride quality of the Seraph compared to the Shadow and Spirit/Spur. Given a Royce is for wafting along, that matters more than road holding or handling. Especially given the quality of our British roads.

Thanks for the kind words! I’ll see if I can pull some strings and get a few more Crewe cars on soon. I think the seraph appeals to me as from a driving standpoint it somewhat bridges the Bentley/ Rolls Royce gap. I’d like to spend some time with a DHC of some description though, I think I’d be more partial to the Rolls Royce experience with the wind blowing through my hair!
@saxonuk14

@@carsandcustard I can understand that. More modern cars are going to be better driving cars than those from older generations (though not really modern cars, which I now think are going backwards in terms of driver enjoyment). Whether they can waft like a Royce or Bentley of old is another matter.

You need to work on the accuracy of some of the history. The coupe was not made after 1981 (though I believe one or two were registered in 1982). There was also a fairly big upgrade for 1977 (big enough for the Silver Shadow to become the Silver Shadow II, though the Corniche didn't change series number). The steering switched from recirculating ball to rack and pinion amongst other changes. Easy way to spot a later model - look for the spoiler, rubber bumper and fog lights below the bumper.

@@carsandcustard Nor am I, but I know a little bit about a few cars (mainly pre-Merc Aston Martins). Really nice to see someone take the time to record a video of an old car like this. The Camargue would be nice to see too. And really nice to see someone take the time to answer a comment that wasn't gushing praise. Well done! I will have a look at what else you've produced.

I currently have a 1.2 Lounge, and I bought it because its cheap to run and maintain. The economy being the way it is I needed to save money so its helping me do that, plus its 60s styling makes it more fun to drive. Most cars today look like featureless electric shavers so its nice to have something a little different 🤷‍♂️

Agree with all of this and I enjoyed your review. I absolutely love my 2008 1.4 Sport which I’ve owned since 2010. Loves to be thrashed, looks pretty, sounds good, nicely weighted steering (with Sport mode engaged) and brings on smiles with every drive. Without doubt the most reliable car I’ve ever owned and I even find it comfortable on long journeys, cruising on the motorway and dual carriageway in 6th gear. Mine hasn’t let me down in 14 years, even with lapses in the maintenance schedule in recent years. Will not sell it, even though it’s a little used garage queen nowadays.

It is true. They improved the ride on the LCI cars, but the M-Sport suspension is still very harsh. The best bet for ride quality would be a later SE with some smaller wheels.

In the US we got the 1.4 made in Mexico which didn't help. The engine is great. We had a Natural Aspirated engine from 2012-2014 100HP, the Turbo model in 2013 ~120 HP. Abarth ~160 HP, not the same as in the UK. They are slow at take off, but on the Highway they can do 80-100 MPH like nothing.

Try to buy one without the panoramic roof. Check to see if the timing chain has been done. Make sure the tyres are matching, as they’re quite sensitive to mismatched ones, especially if it’s a staggered set up.

The American non-turbo FIAT 500s are all the same, regardless whether it's a Sport, Pop, or Gucci. They get all the turbo engine cooling features internally without the turbo. 101 hp. MultiAir, 16 valve cylinder head. Non-turbo intake and exhaust manifolds, & a higher compression set of pistons (10.8 vs. 9.8 turbo) are the only changes.
