Wright destroyed the original beauty. Let's redecorate the pyramids, they look old and tired! I understand, he got a contract and the owner needs to keep the property up to date, but imagine if we still had the original! way more interesting than what we see today.

That Mies van der Roe designed courthouse is not as beautifully detailed as the 1920s buildings are. Function (Mies) without style, ornamentation and flair is boring.

I’ve always felt the garage detracted significantly from the project, architecturally. The bottom 19 floors (really the streets ape) is dominated by a lifeless display of the building’s infrastructure. It’s like proudly displaying the building’s furnace or its sewer system. I think buildings should instead be about people.

I find the streetscape odd. Imagine walking along and all you see is the ass end of parked cars. It seems almost dystopian.

Remembering this fascinating building when visiting Chicago in 1986 age 13. And adding to the comments below, considering that in Amsterdam everyday people accidentally end up in the canal when reverse parking their car you might understand why valet parking is obligatory when reverse parking on the 19th floor midtown ;-)

I am from Philadelphia where one of our heavy rail transit is a combination of el and subway. In our case the subway runs through our downtown but in the west and north east area it runs as an el. A few years ago they total rebuilt the west Phila. portion of the line. It still looks like the old structure but with the modern construction does run quieter. I have visited Chicago several times and always try to ride the Chicago El. As mentioned it is a great way to see the city and I do feel safer on an el than riding a subway.

I personally think overpass structures in super-urban cities are essential, something you can't avoid not having, despite all the negative outcome it has. Not everybody can get what they want. Although Manhattan in NYC has lost many of its elevated lines I think Chicago was able to retain the L because the loop area is surrounded by bodies of water in close proximity in all directions, probably a big challenge to build tunnels below it at the time of its construction. Even if they managed to build a subway into the area, the tunnels must have been so down deep that the stations, especially the ones nearby the river, would have had low ridership or at least heavy complaints in the era when elevators were not so common. Speaking of accessibility, most of these early rail transits including subways have their platforms very close to ground level without a floor for mezzanine, which I think is great. I wish Chicago keeps its iconic Ls. Too bad NYC had torn down its portion in Manhattan, including the 1860s original section. They still do hold the title for the oldest El remaining for its Franklin Avenue line right?

Something that I've noticed about these towers during my binge watching of anything to do with Marina City, is that the hallways make me feel unnerved, and possibly even the apartments when unfurnished, because a perfect circle is so unnatural in the natural world that such curves come off alien to the senses. Not sure anyone else gets that feeling.
@jpp7783

I agree. When interiors lack 90 degree angles, a space feels disorienting. As humans, we like to know where we are in relation to our surroundings, and we lose that. (Think of residential subdivisions with twisty turning streets-you never really know where you are.) The hallways are particularly unnerving because there’s no sunlight or exterior views so you really have no clue. Picture a shopping mall with oddly-angled corridors. Now remove the anchor points-the big anchor stores or other landmarks like the food court or the big fountain in the centre. It’s unsettling to never know where you are.

I think Marina City towers are a work of genius. Right on the river, I always stop and admire them while walking past on the river walk. I’d love to visit one of the apartments. The cost of even a studio there would be beyond my means, but it’s fun to dream.

Marina Towers has a reputation here in Chicago as being hideously ugly, but also oddly charming. They're awful looking but they're unique, and they were an experiment to try something new and interesting. The units aren't terribly comfortable to live in, but they're by no means bad. That said, paying several thousand a month in rent for one of these units makes them not even close to worth it for living space. The views are incredible though, and the rooftop is amazing.

I would imagine these floodlight fixtures have been changed out with RGB multicolor LED fixtures that are controlled remotely which eliminates the need to physically go to the roof to install colored gels over fixture lenses. The only reason to physically need to go up on roof would be for fixture maintenance/repair/replacement. They can now probably do dynamic lighting displays if wanted.
