Could not ever possibly pay me enough to do this. I maintain mine and have only ever had one pumped out, which it didn't need. I ended up replacing the drain field because of root intrusion. Great life hack; I install a cleanout after the tank so I can add a 50# bag of rock salt, it keeps roots from growing! Don't forget your enzymes (Rid-X)

This brings back memories working with my Pops in the early 70's, He installed a bunch of septic systems but he was a picky master plumber and I remember him saying then about a couple of them "If 2 fat people walk over this at the same time it's gonna fall in, I'm guessing even in the day a customer could cheap out on the quality but they were on their own if it failed.

Juat replaced a sluggish drain field that would also get submerged whenever the water table rose. Every line was clogged with roots. We elevated the new drain field and added a pump tank. I like that the new lids for old and new tanks are surface level. There's no longer a mystery as to what might be buried there. And I prefer being able to inspect and repair as much as possible myself.

@Straight_Flush_Septic The inspector arrived during the "dry" season. But since I knew the issues, I made clear his design criteria included where I knew the water table maxed out. It turns out that silt in sand (this is Forida) leaves evidence of water levels as well.

I will stick to my Camping Toilet. They want/ed me to put in a ABOVE Ground System... Just the Drainage Field alone, for a Single Person, has to be 20 x 20 and the Bottom of it where the Pipes would lay, has to be 4ft Above the Ground and they want another 4ft of Coverage Dirt.. And Whole System will cost over $20,000.. And I live in a Camper All By Myself.. I don't exactly understand the statement of bypassing the water treatment plant by discharging into the city sewer. As long as you are discharging into a sanitary sewer, the water flows to the wastewater treatment plant anyways. I can understand the problem of discharging into storm sewers by accident, you would not want to do that. However, the statement that you are bypassing the water treatment plant by discharging into a sanitary sewer is simply not true, to the best of my knowledge.
@shthappens5124
@shthappens5124 Ай бұрын
I see your point - that's not very clear in my comments and is actually the reason I was doing what I was doing - so this is a very important point. So let me clarify. I am required by law to discharge my tank at the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Normally I can NOT dump directly into any sewer I want. You are correct, that by discharging into the sewer, that waste would eventually reach the WWTP. So bypassing is not the best choice of words here. In this case, it was an emergency, so I received special permission to discharge directly into the sewer rather than having to drive to the WWTP. The wastewater plant is about a 25 minute one-way drive and the concern was that this system was going to overflow so it needed to be monitored all night. Therefore that 1 hour round trip drive plus dumping could leave the lift station unmonitored so I was given permission to discharge directly into the sewer. Since I was not having to make that drive back and forth, from my perspective I am bypassing the drive back and forth to the WWTP but the waste itself is NOT bypassing the WWTP. The WWTP charges me a fee for dumping and they keep track of each load we discharge in case someone discharges something they should not. You can imagine if the wrong things are discharged into the WWTP it could potentially affect hundreds of thousands of people who depend on that water. Discharging directly into the sewer would be undocumented so it couldn't be traced. Thanks for watching and really appreciate your comments. That def is not clear in the video and is such an important part of why I was doing what I was doing.

I found two access points, one where the pipe from the house feeds into the tank and another, much larger opening. Is there typically only one big access hole on most home septic systems?
@Straight_Flush_Septic
@Straight_Flush_Septic Ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and thanks for the comments. Usually there are 2 access ports of about 2 feet square located near the long ends of the tank (tank is rectangular). One allows entry to that inlet pipe from the house that you can see, and the other allows entry to the outlet T that leads to the drainfield. Older tanks sometimes have several panels on the top of the tank that are roughly 4 feet by 2 feet that can weigh several hundred pounds, instead of those 2 X 2 ports. I have seen tanks that have one of the 2 X 2 ports on one end and no other port and i have seen one 2 X 2 port on one end and one very large opening on the other end. That is even more unusual, but sounds like what yours is. Those larger ports are associated with older tanks - usually earlier than around 1980, at least in our area (central North Carolina)

@@giftofgabbery - interesting - some of these things can be unusual and this one sounds a bit different. The tanks often do have a smaller inspection port in the center, but i don't think i have seen one with 2 smaller ports at the ends and a big port in the middle. Sounds like you dug the entire tank up! But when we are working on a system from the early 80's or older I do see some odd things. Thanks for sharing.

@Straight_Flush_Septic
@Straight_Flush_Septic 3 ай бұрын
Yes - kitchen grease and wipes keep us in business! They will ruin a septic system. Grease goes down the sink as hot liquid, then cools and solidifies into a floating rock in the tank. It also clings to the pipes and over time clogs it up.

Thanks for the video. We hadn’t pumped ours in over 12 years.. ours was as bad as that one. I used to work out of town so I wasn’t at home when it was pumped years ago. I’m retired so I took a more hands on approach this time. I dug up the lid and had it ready for the pump truck. I installed a riser this time so I don’t have to do that again. Thanks to your videos and a few others, I’m more educated on the proper maintenance mainly pumping every 3-5 years. Thanks again for taking the time to help us DIYers out by making these videos!

I have a question for you. New subscriber here. I’m in Tennessee. I had my tank pumped the other day… took me a while to find my septic lid. They said if I found it, dug it and had it ready they get to it quicker because they were so behind. My neighbor had his pumped a few days later by a different company. My tank hadn’t been pumped for 12 years.. very solid top to bottom. My neighbor had his pumped about three years ago. His was mostly liquid.. black like pond water. Here’s my question. My neighbors tank was full of sewer flies and their larvae. Mine didn’t have any that I noticed. Is it a good thing to have them in your tank? If so, where would I find the to put in the tank? Thanks in advance for any answer. I like your channel! Very informative!

sorry for the delay - I thought i had replied already. You've got me stumped. I have breathed as few of those things in before after opening a tank - you talk about nasty! Never could understand how something could live in there - starved of oxygen. But as to whether they help the system or not - I don't know. These systems typically require very little maintenance. There are things you can't flush or put down the sink - wipes and cooking grease to name the big ones, but not much else you really need to add. There are some folks that tell you to add yeast or use some of those monthly additives, but the marginal improvement you get from them I don't think justifies the cost. Just get it pumped every 3-5 years. If your system is older, you have a lot of people living there or your soil content is not the greatest, pump it more often. Thanks for the comments! David

@@shthappens5124 thanks for the reply! I’m a huge DIYer… obviously pumping my own septic tank is my limitation (I don’t have a tank truck)! I’ve done a little additional research… I agree with you. I don’t think the sewer flies are desirable . My understanding is that they can only access it through broken or compromised pipes. I’m going to stick with your advice and just pump it every several years! Thanks again for replying and also the videos you make!
