Josh I myself grow up in Chicago and you are an inspiration to imitate. I like that you also are down to earth as well. My question to you is what it takes to get to the level of musician that you have become. I have a son that he is only 9 years old but he likes percussion. I have not introduce him to it but he is been playing piano since he was four. He say he prefers playing percussion instead of piano. I would like for him to continue with his piano lessons but I don’t know if doing the right decision. I would like also to ask you in case he gets an opportunity like yours in life what is the best way to go any advice. I see a lot of potential in him. As his father I want to look and do what is best for him. Thank you and hope to hear from you.

Dear Mr. Jones, do you have any advice on improving reading skills? other than the classic, "just read a lot of music under your skill level and make it harder gradually" I've been playing percussion and primarily mallets since I was a little kid, back then I learned all by ear and memorized everything, it wasn't until I joined the local youth orchestra that I started actually reading like everybody else, its been 5 ish years since then and I've for sure gotten a lot better at reading, but I still rely a lot on my ears and my memory to learn new rep, so reading still feels very slooooow and exhausting. So please, any words of wisdom you could give me would be very appreciated, since right now I have to learn a ton challenging music, including a 15 minute marimba concerto and it feels like a daunting task knowing how slow my reading is :( Thanks in advance!

Came across this talent after reading how the antiquated Kansas City Symphony tried to dismiss him unfairly as head percussionist. I thought to myself drums, drums, I need to see what impression drums can do aside what we see in bands. After seeing this video he’s insanely talented. Never in my life have I heard drums played with such perfection. I will be surfing KZbin to find him in concerts play because he’s already blown me away with this quick video let alone seeing him in his element. I wonder if he knows how brilliant he himself is. Amasing!😮❤

I have tiny hands...and heavier mallets require me to have "stick showing"at the wrist end."Also the balance of the mallets seems to make a difference......DID enjoy your rant.Thanks!

You can access closed captions in the bottom right corner of the video (next to the gear menu), which should make it easier to follow along. Hope that helps!

The mask is unnecessary as he is alone in front of the camera. He speaks clearly, there are no problems in understanding what he says even though i am somewhat hard of hearing. You might need to consult a doctor for your hearing. Something seems to be amiss.

Uhh,, playing tymps is bong instead of beoww! You must make every stroke like ringing a bell! French grip!!! All fingers then bring in the wrists!! Typms are a pitch instrument! If you hit them wrong the pitch deviates!

I love this, really useful food for thought since a couple of auditions are coming up in Europe. If I've understood you correctly Josh, Tommy Igoe calls a similar thing "glass ceiling" practice - you gotta break through it to find your limit, then work backwards! Otherwise, you'll never find your glass ceiling, then it'll find you (and you'll have more work to do to break it again, etc). (Incidentally, just before you started on your 'intentional pressure' point, the image of a concentric Rubik's Cube popped into my head..)

Did you have to declare to Calgary that you were planning to audition for this job? If so, how far in advance did you have to mention it, and would your job have still been available to you if you hadn’t won the Kansas position?
@JJPercussion1

Hi! I didn't have to tell them luckily, the audition just happened to be on a couple off days. But even if I did, the job would've still been available contractually if I didn't win the Kansas City job.

@@JJPercussion1 Thanks Josh! That's interesting that you didn't have to tell them, it's expected of UK musicians who want to audition elsewhere. Cool!
