Do you remember the single track Skokie Valley/North Shore line? There were gates on Glenview road by Harlem, on East Lake by Meier's Tavern, and on Sunset Ridge road by Barnaby's pizza in Northbrook. Towards the end of its existence only freights used it. When freights stopped at one of those crossings traffic was a mess. The line was abandoned in 2k2

I hate to say this, but you seem to have missed the 2 most scenic sections of that trip. The area on either side of the Oregon/California border is stunning. And between Gilroy and Salinas the train passes through Elkhorn Slough which is always a lovely surprise. If you ever get a chance to take the California Zephyr, you will love the huge railyard in Roseville, east of Sacramento.
