Better to tune in fifths, with the bottom C string as a low B extension (Thomastik makes them) tuned up half a step, which gets you down to low A-flat. Fifths tuning makes the instrument sound so much better. I don't know how useful the A flat is, but the low B flat is quite useful, for example at the end of Elgar's "Nimrod", and also at the end of Chabrier's Larghetto for Horn and Orchestra. You need a fat string, and an extra long length. (Also really gummy rosin.)

Not sure if you guys are aware, but this video won't load at all. Pt 2 will load just fine, but not this one, it just skips to the end of the video anytime I try to play it. I've tried on several different browsers & devices. On your website the "Embedded" videos aren't there either, just the links to the videos.

Lucky me, my bass is microtonal lol. It’s somewhere between D end Eb, leaning more toward Eb. But definitely not an Eb neck; I got to play one of those last week, and the access to the higher regions was a bit easier

How much would say the standard neck thickness is at the first position? From thumb to the the top of the fingerboard

I'd think a fingerboard could always be saved by planing. Why wasn't this one saveable?

Great comparison video. I own a mid 50’s C-1. I’m pleased at how well it showed in your video. The UB is a very nice instrument. It’s a coin flip. Great video.

Got this tip from Chuck Traeger's books. Also - anyone who is using a solid wire/coat hangar tailpiece wire, replace it with the cable wire. The whole bass needs to vibrate and the solid wires inhibit the tailpiece from vibrating as it should.

I don't like that sound at all . Please stick to your regular bass .
@mattgreven76158 ай бұрын
definitely thought-proviking. Especially when you consider some of these older basses going for $100k. And people are buying them! I have to think that many of these are bandaids on bandaids on bandaids. I play a 1967 Gotz hybrid. It sounds great, and has given me zero trouble in the 35 years of ownership. I often get bass envy, but then I remind myself that there are ZERO investments in high-dollar basses that will pay for themselves (for me). thanks for the video.

probably good bass, but you need to have someone demonstrate that knows how to play. How about a bit of pops rosin on that bow. All I hear is scratch and thin flakey tone. Sorry! being honest.
@rossmartin70038 ай бұрын
why don't you ever give examples of fine orchestral basses being played with a bow? Plenty of videos but no demonstrations.

I came here today to look for details on the double upright bass. I found a neck @ Salvation Army last week and want to build a non-standard body from a cojon (wood box drum) and add a bass drum pedal for a fun party instrument. The Upton is a beautiful instrument and I am glad I found you today!
