The government owe nyself and the remaining National Service veterans thousands of pounds, in compensation for the pay discimination forced on concripts.Being payed the derisory 16- 20 percent pay,of what the regular serviceman earned,or what we would earn in civilian life, was 2 years of poverty and discrimination. Talk of it making a man of you,is nonsence, I was 21,in a highly skilled job,and most of my NS: colleagues, were like myself, defered,5 year,ex apprentice's

My parents thought it would be a nice holiday in 1973: with a caravan and horse, without any experience about camping or horses, with 2 children (one almost 3 years and one almost 1 year old). So there we went to Ireland (from Holland), got us a Blarney Romany Caravan and we took off. Our horse was called Aileen. She was very stubborn, so my parents walked beside her all holiday long. Despite all things, we had a great holiday (so I'm told, because I was nearly 3 years old) and luckily we still have the pictures :-)

Thanks, Brian, for showing this antique train lovers, like me, in HK. It will even greater if I can hear the horn made by these "Old Faithfuls" who had catalysed the indrustrial developments & city urbanization, whether in HK, China or UK. I felt a bit strange that most the folks are elders. In HK, many children & even teenagers, are train or bus enthusiasts. At least, my 3 Princes, were train lovers, they were crazy about Thomas the tank engines & his Friends : Gordon, Clarabel, Trevor, ..the Fat Controller.

Hi Brian, Thank you very much for sharing this. My father was in the Gunners for, I believe, 11 years. Like you, he did training at Oswestry amongst other places. He served in Korea, but after hostiles had ended. He was then in Hong Kong until he left the Army as a Captain in about 1957 or 1958 I think. His name was Ian Brooke Vergin (known as Vergin). He would have been serving in HK around the time you were. I know it is a very long shot, but I don't suppose you knew of him did you? Thanks once again. James

For the British Army, the Malayan Emergency was fought primarily by National Servicemen. The most successful jungle bashers were the Suffolks and Hampshires. It was my honour to work with a former officer of the South Wales Borderers who stayed on in Malaya as a planter. I believe he was also a national serviceman who was commissioned.

Irritated my wife when I mentioned my NS in HongKong was the best time of my life - it was! Ended as Adjutant of District Workshop REME 1955. Brilliant time but working flat-out all the time - 150 ORs and 150 Chinese civilians in workshop adjacent HMS Tamar (Naval dockyard). Ahh! Those were the days! Bill Bailey

Loved this Brian - I grew up in a house a few hundred yards from that spot (on Wren Street) and I spent many an evening staring at The Malverns and Clent whilst the sun set over Brierley Hill 😅. It could be a tough place to grow up (I moved away aged 15) but I do miss that view - thank you for capturing it. Cheers. Rich.
