Good review but you didn't cover camera sync and the transmitter module. Im sure it all works - but the devil is always in the detail. I wonder how the Elinchrom solution stacks up to brands like Godox that seem to be big on innovation - but not sure about their reliability. Subscribed!

Can you shoot high speed sync with these? Can I shoot at 1/1000th of a second shutter speed? Thanks!

If you want to use hss and bounce off of a ceiling or wall I use godox triggers on camera and flash. Just put the flashgun on a bracket beside camera

@@jellevanthuyne1984 I don't see how using non-rechargeable battery could damage the light? As long as it's the right type / power of battery it should be fine. Hi Sam, I have got Sony HVL-F60RM Flash which works in HSS mode in front and bounce position. Any shutter speed above 1/250 brings HSS flash icon on my A99II screen and it fires in both positions. I think your view about lack of HSS in bounce position is a bit overstated and in fact you've given the correct explanation from the manual. The lower power output in HSS mode would give very under exposed picture in bounce position. Moreover in weddings why would you use faster shutter than 1/250 anyway when you're using the flash? Especially with flash reflector card in place atop the flash....
@PhotoCameraTech5 жыл бұрын
Hi Navid. Thanks for your comment. What I am saying in the review is that in HSS mode the flash does not synch with the shutter above 1/250 if the flash is not angled to 90 degrees. This means that for example, if I went to a shutter speed of 1/1000th of a second and tried to use the flash, I would get a dark band at the top or bottom of the picture created by the shutter blocking out the flash light. This isn't an overstatement, it's a fact! The lower power in HSS mode would be perfect for the way I shoot, which is why I was a bit irritated that Sony have engineered it to shut off in certain flash positions. I don't usually shoot weddings but I frequently use shutter speeds of over 1/250 second when shooting events: The flash can be fill in flash outdoors for example. Hope this helps explain! Cheers, Sam

@@PhotoCameraTech Many thanks for clarifying it. Yes, if it causes banding on HSS it is bizarre and not acceptable. However I have tried various shutter speeds on my F60RM and there appears to be no banding. Is it possible they have rectified this issue in the new iteration of the flashgun? My original F60 was stolen and I've bought the new RM version. Is there anything I'm overlooking? Here's the link to the pictures taken with various shutter speed and flash.. www.flickr.com/photos/navidsqureshi/albums/72157707856992694
@PhotoCameraTech5 жыл бұрын
@@nsqvideos Interesting, your shots look fine. Maybe the RM version has rectified the issue? Sorry I should clarify - I wasn't actually getting banding on my F60M set to bounce position, because the flash actually limits the shutter speed to 1/250th sec as soon as you move it out of the default position. This I do find incredibly annoying because, for example, I might set my shutter to e.g. 1/500th of a second and take some shots but if I turn on the flash the shutter automatically drops to 1/250th sec. Banding can occur though if trying to use a non native flash with higher shutter speeds and no HSS. The thing about the F60M is that it does have HSS which could quite easily work in bounce position, but Sony have needlessly limited it. I often use my flashguns on a very low power, for example when shooting in low light. At higher ISOs the smallest amount of flash will have a big impact on the shot. Anyway enough rambling, it looks like the RM version of this flash may have solved this issue. Thanks for the heads-up.
@nsqvideos5 жыл бұрын
@@PhotoCameraTech You're right, I've seen other videos on you tube confirming this issue with F60M. As soon as the flash head is moved to bounce position it reverts to 1/250. Thankfully this doesn't happen in RM version. Best regards.

Hi Yuri. I think this could be a good flash for weddings. Aside from the HSS issue, it really is a well made flash. Having said that, I haven't tried out many other Sony flashes so can't really compare.
@49zebratown6 жыл бұрын
Having had one of these for a few months, I would like to say that I think the unit is very overpriced, for what it does. The flash is not worth a jot and why a plastic cold shoe? It’ll get damaged, over time. The Rotolite recommended rechargeable batteries, are excessively overpriced so look for cheaper elsewhere. It’s great as a fill light and the circular shape gives nice catch lights but you’ll find very good, much cheaper alternatives on Amazon or eBay.

Hi Sam, Darren here from Rotolight. Thanks for the review, there is a bump from 0% to 1% as with LED's they need to have a certain amount of power for them to turn on. We can bring the power down gradually when we are going from ON to OFF but going from OFF to ON we are currently looking at ways around that :) The Elinchrom receiver built into the light will only work with Elinchrom SKYPORT transmitters, we have included the 3.5mm sync port on the back so that people can use 3rd party transmitter and receiver systems if they wish :)

Hi Darren, thanks for the heads-up. For me the sudden dimming jump is not a major issue, but I though it noteworthy enough to mention in the review. Totally understand that it's probably more to do with the way LEDs work in general though. Have added a note in the description about the flash trigger compatibility. Keep up the good work at Rotolight dude - awesome product!

Hi Hector, not sure whether you're using Godox flash or power pack? But if you extended use and better recycling time I would recommend powering your flash with a separate power pack such as the Godox PB960. Only downside is that it's an extra piece of gear to carry around.

I haven't experienced any overheating, but then I haven't really pushed it that hard. I have been using it with my A7Rii and that doesn't shoot that fast, even in burst mode. Great idea in theory BUT Lee ND filter sheets are not for cameras they are made for Stage lighting ( I have used Lee filters on shows for 30+ years) The ND camera filters are a completely different and higher quality. Sheets of Lee ND lighting filter have variable light transmission qualities due to the manufacturing process which does not show when pushing light through with a stage light but WILL show up as a faint vertical; or horizontal streaking effect when a photographic image is processed. If you want a cheap alternative try Welding Mask Glass plates which fit perfectly into a Cokin P filter holder and cost around £1.50 each, this glass comes in various shades including an extreme black which is easily double the darkness of Lee Big Stopper , All Welding glass is optically true.
