My mum used to be in ALGS .

Sometime in the autumn of 1953 a friend of mine was the trombonist in the Watford Light Orchestra and they needed a trumpeter. I auditioned and was accepted. One of my early jobs with them was with the ALGSS and I was astounded by the high standard of the soloists and chorus. Some of the most notable were Maurice Staines, Revd. Wilkinson, Derek Pheonix, Bryan Ryecroft.Joan Power. The Crouch Twins. There were others whose names I cannot now recall. ALGSS had several Music Directors over the years, most notably Eric M/`Gavin who conducted us at the first performance the Society made in the Watford Palace Theatre. The producer was always the village chemist whose first name I do not recall but everyone called him Andy Anderson. His wife also sang in the chorus sometimes I carried on with them for eight or nine years and was sorry to leave. Parking was beginning to be a problem, My wife was having problems with her mother who lived with us and was suffering chronic heart and lung problems. I had hoped to take up the trumpet again after Ma-in-Law died but my son got me involved in going toJu jitsu with him and that was the end of my trumpet playing. David Thorne
