It's a really good conversation! I also relate to the fact I never really thought of 'women's literature' when I was growing up. I just picked up books that seemed interesting to me. Hell, I read books that were clearly for adults when I was probably a little too young to fully appreciate them! I'm glad I did, though I can also appreciate a need to perhaps, well, not censor books by age, but discuss difficult themes with younger readers as a guiding adult. But yeah, I didn't pay attention to the sex of the author, nor to YA as a category (much). I just wanted mind-expanding science-fiction and fantasy, for the most part (I made room for a smidge of general fiction as well lol). From a feminist 'consciousness raising' perspective, I understand, and can appreciate (even get behind to a certain extent) a desire to more actively seek out works by female authors. But I agree that 'segregating' literary analysis and consideration, as it were, by sex, is largely harmful. If women are to be respected and fully considered as fully human subjects, peers in humanity, then our creative works should just be labelled as such: creative works, written by human beings (and within their respecting genres for ease of distribution). And besides, since women's experiences ARE human experiences, even if a book focuses on spheres or themes more traditionally associated with female 'sex roles', that book should still be simply considered LITERATURE, not 'women's literature', because again 'traditionally female' experiences ARE human experiences, because women are human beings.

Great discussion! Some really interesting choices coming out so early, can't wait to see how the lists ramp up in the next epsiodes! My main take away so far is that we need to do a follow up "Games That I Forgot To Add But One Of The Others Did" list 😄 Gotta apologies to the boys for my awkward category system... When Susana asked me for a top 50 list I was just stumped! Only way I coud begin to organise it in my head was to break it down into categories. Thought it'd be an interesting approach and hopefully not too derailing.

Sounds like basic common sense to me. I rarely know most of the points listed above about any of the authors I read. Sometimes it's obvious from the name or they may have a picture on the inside sleeve, but that is never used to decide if I want to read the book. That is what the blurb is for!

The Hexologists: totally agree, well-written but trying to hard to be quaint imo. I wanted more. 7/10 but won't be continuing. JS&MN: an all-time favourite for me, magic comes alive in the words and the world - the best of fantasy. 🥳 Sun Eater: very good but hmm, JS&MN is way, way higher for me hehe. So glad you enjoyed it this much. My favourite installment would be Kingdoms of Death. I binged the series too. I think I'll get Book 6, wait for Book 7 and read them all instead of having to reread twice. 😁 Happy New Year!

The first 10 minutes or so are kinda hard to get through, feeling like someone's home movie. But once the conversation starts, boy does it get good. As you say, completely rivetting... clever and thought provoking without being preachy or conceited. The "filmaking" technique may be lacking but concept, dialogue, stroy-telling and acting (though this last suffers from poor staging, lighting and editing) are rich and more than worth and hour and a half of anyone's time. If I had one criticism of these elements it would be the slightly face palm end twist... though completely unexpected, it was a very convenient way to prove the point to the viewer...

Hello Susana and Paromita👋🏻 this was a great chat! I agree Susana that I wish people would be more open about books they didn’t like or DNF even if the author is a friend. I think one thing that holds most people back, including myself, is we are so used to having no filter and typing away in comment sections online without any repercussions that many people struggle to speak critically in a professional manor without making it too emotional or personal. So that type of discourse is extremely challenging for people which is why we seem to mostly get rant reviews or never hear about the book again if someone didn’t like it. Hope you both have a good day!
