Pretty sure this isn’t his actual voice but a re-enactment. I’ve heard is actual voice recordings before.

I wonder if this was really his natural register, or if it was a radio affect so that the machine could more clearly pick up on what he was saying versus if he spoke in a lower tone. Does anyone know if older radios weren't as capable of picking up lower voices than higher ones?

I used to have this. Thank you for the beautiful photos. "I have a Song to Sing O! is an amalgam of the Act l and the Act ll (Finale) versions. The abridged Act l Finale includes the complete solo Yeomen couplets with Fairfax. A better selection is the d.v.d. by Gilbert and Sullivan for All on KZbin under "Yeomen of the Guard" 1972 Traditional production with believable acting and set. Good transfer. I sincerely hope "Trial" complete & highlights: "Pinafore" "Pirates" "Iolanthe" "the Mikado" and "Gondoliers" (but the Duke wears a blazer!) will also appear on KZbin.

This was an excellent recording for it's day, but the American accents, the strained vocals and the plodding pace let the piece down. The more recent professional recording from Dutton Vocalion just knocks this performance out of court.

A perfect upload. At the time, the rather harsh and boxy sound was a regular feature of Decca. Many thanks for uploading this important sound document.

The sound of a politician’s voice didn’t matter nearly as much back then as it does now, because the majority of voters would never hear the candidate speak. They’d just see quotes in newspapers mostly. A male politician sounding like this today might get laughed off the stage, but how many great leaders have we lost that way?

Great Heart by Rudyard Kipling on the death of TR Concerning brave Captains Our age hath made known For all men to honour, One standeth alone, Of whom, o'er oceans, Both people may say: "Our realm is diminished With Great-Heart away." In purpose unsparing, In action no less, The labours he praised He would seek and profess Through travail and battle, At hazard and pain... And our world is none the braver Since Brave-Heart was ta'en! Plain speech with plain folk, And plain words for false things, Plain faith in plain dealings 'Twixt neighbours or kings, He used and he followed, However it sped... Our world is none more honest Now Great-Heart is dead! The heat of his spirit Struck warm through all lands; For he loved such as showed "Emselves men of their hands; In love as as in hate Paying home to the last... But our world is none the kinder Now Great-Heart has passed! Hard-schooled by long power, Yet most humble of mind Where aught that he was Might advantage mankind. Leal servant, sure guide... Oh, our world is none the safer Now Great-Heart has died! Let those who would handle Make sure they can wield His far-reaching sword And his close-guarding shield: For those who must journey Henceforward alone Have need of stout convoy Now Great-Heart is gone. Quite something, isn't it?

I fear we won’t have a man like this ever again, we no longer choose the best of us to lead. The only man who had the balls to go against the status quo because he wanted to actually change things and not compromise his integrity.

A flawed upload. Don't worry about the slight jump on the record - it is very minor. The stuck needle is, perhaps a little more serious. The sound, though dated, is very acceptable. The recording is forward and clear. Many thanks for posting this rare treasure.

Amy Evans did not work with Gilbert on his last opera, FALLEN FAIRIES (music Edward German). Evans replaced Nancy McIntosh, much against Gilbert's wishes. He did not rehearse her. The decision was taken by C H Workman, the current manager at the Savoy, against Gilbert's advice or wishes. Sullivan actually died in November 1900, not 1901 as stated.

I'm sorry, but this is by no means a 'rare' recording. It has been reissued on a number of occasions on both LP and CD, most notably on Naxos where it is coupled with the 1953 D'Oyly Carte recording of the complete opera.

This recording actually dates to 1907 and was originally issued on disc by the Odeon company. It has been issued commercially on CD on the Symposium record label (Cat. No. 1293) so is, presumably, copyright to them as of 2001. The cast is Willie Rouse - St Joseph: Harry Dearth - Corcoran: Walter Hyde - Ralph: Harry Thornton - Deadeye: Alfred Cunningham - Boatswain: W Anderson - Bobstay: Elsa Sinclair - Josephine: Miss Burnett - Hebe: Ada Florence - Buttercup. This presentation has no noticeable difference to the Symposium transfer and release so is it your own work Gerry Treacy? Note also that it is Dearth who sings both Corcoran and Sir Joseph in the Act Two finale. It can in no way be assumed that Rouse performs in a style akin to Grossmith, the original Sir Joseph - Grossmith was far more musical than Rouse who performs in an approximation of a 1907 Rex Harrison, whereas Grossmith was a first class musician who wrote and performed a great deal of his own music and was, indeed, the composer of Gilbert's 1892 Operetta HASTE TO THE WEDDING in which Grossmiths son, George Jnr, made his theatrical debut as Cousin Foodle. There is, in fact, no evidence that this recording of PINAFORE bears any relation to performance practices of the day.

I have carried Steve Gillette's album version of this in my bones from the first time I heard it 30 years ago. I played it to my wife at the time. Years later, without prompting, she confessed it was her favourite song of all time. Sadly, soon afterwards, like the boy, she was beckoned from me by the Erlking. 😓❤️
