This property could be used to house at least a few dozen migrants. Surly progressive Martha's Vineyard would open its arms and hearts to their fellow members of the human race who desperately need a place to call home. The cultural enrichment these migrants from Haiti, Venezuela, Somalia, etc. would bring to the vineyard community would be priceless. Remember, it takes all of us to make a positive difference.

When my Dad owned Greenrange Farm it was a working dairy farm and was over 640 acres. It was a great place to grow up. It's a 'gentleman's ' farm now with a lot of changes but you can't change the views or the quality of life living there. I made the farm sign back in '78. A lot of history there. Over the years it's been a Dairy Farm, a Sheep Farm, a crop farm selling everything from hay to hickory nuts. When we bought the place Author Sawyer was still living in one of the 4 houses that were there at that time. Author was the man that built Greenrange from the consolidation of several smaller farms. He was over 100 when I knew him in '61, and 'old Herby had been working for Sawyer since he was 16 and he was in his in his late 60's when I knew him. I was 10 when we moved on the farm and I'm in my 70's now.

Many people have asked me if all of Bob's trees died. No! The site which has the smaller trees, in straight rows, with no leaves are all black walnut. They are doing great. The forest which is leafing out has a mixture of maple, oak, walnut and ash. Bob planted the ash trees on the wet sites, where they grow the best. It is a great lesson in species diversification. On the 22-acre site referenced, ash trees represented only 10% of the forest canopy.

My grandparents owned this property from 1959-1982. They restored it lovingly and with historic accuracy. The people who bought it in 1982 painted it the bilious yellow with the garish blue shutters. I hope future owners will show more respect. This is a truly special place. Happiest times of my life were spent here.
