Hsbc at least was far better than Scotia bank with front line staff changed each week and with the branch manager always shy away from the customer!

How so? Did you went to any secondary school at all?! Are you from a pig farm in Mainland China!
For your information : if you are a RBC client who has a multiple products with RBC ( like Master Credit Card, Investment A/C, Cheque a/c ) or you are at old age, then RBC is willing to waive you most of account fees? RBC like other big banks TD Bank will offer similar tariff fees. This is customer driven market? Also, this is the HSBC's business strategy to focus its businesses in China and Hong Kong.
Retail Banking for foreign banks coming into Canada is a VERY EXPENSIVE PROPOSITION. In the 1980's there had been many foreign banks entering Canada and opened branches/officers in the major centers (such as Toronto, Montreal) had found Canada was not large enough as a location to do business or to be successful. Retail Banking, in particular, relies heavily on local deposits in C$. The attraction of C$ deposits in Canada is not easy, and EXPENSIVE. The convenience to retail customers, such as Interac, ATM, has been very expensive, in terms of IT and other banking infrastructure investments. In the area of investment banking and commercial banking, the opportunities for foreign banks are limited, even these days, just because of the location factor, e.g Toronto, as compared to New York, Canada is always at a disadvantage. Having said that, there had been one or two exceptions, such as ING (a Dutch financial group), entering Canada and establishing retail banking, but in the end, it was gobbled up by a Canadian local bank. The attraction of foreign banks in opening branches/offices in Canada, in the 1980's had been in Canada's resources industries (like oil and gas, lumber, forestry, etc), in the areas of investment development and financing. However, due to the many restrictions imposed by the Liberal Government and the side-line political parties killed all these opportunities and nowadays, the promotion (whether rightly or wrongly) of trying to lead globally in 'going green' destroys the economies of Canada. This factor must not to be overlooked. This will result in the quick decline of Canada to the level of second-rated countries in the world. Simply, Canada is a resource based country, and to say to develop Canada into a technology-based major, it becomes a fantasy due to the lack of capital, capital market formation, financing, even technical skills, and so forth where in the next door exists giants which are more experienced. The other disadvantage of human resources in Canada is Canada's TAX structure which is not conducive to retain talents in technologies, and also the 'market' for technological products in Canada is very limited in comparison to our southern neighbors.
