Whiteboards are so different. I wrote "// Example of a hashmap" on the board and stood there in silence for 30mins waiting for Copilot.

I personally want to use a marker in the Repeat step. I would jot down some keywords and requirements that I notice in the process. Just so that I have a constant reference to those stuff that I can go back to.

This is why functional Programming is so save isn't it. It just flat out doesn't need state, but can be prooven to be equivalent to turing mschines. The root of all problems of Programming is shared state, no state, no shared state. Mind blown

Great presentation, really helped me grasp this. Why is the lambda symbol necessary in the syntax, given that function definitions always include a period and the period symbol has no other use? So instead of λa.b you could just say a.b
@glebec5 ай бұрын
There are alternative syntaxes which are more minimal, for example if you require using parens around abstractions then you are correct that a lambda is not needed (e.g. `(x.y x)z(a.a a)` is easily parsed). There are also syntaxes which don't even use names! De Bruijn indices allow you to define an abstraction in terms of how many levels "up" the param came from, à la `λ λ λ 3 1 (2 1)` which is the S combinator. LC as it was published wasn't necessarily trying to go for minimal syntax as a goal though, presumably Church et al felt the lambda helped distinguish abstractions from other terms, so we get more syntax than strictly necessary - but the same goes for most programming languages, e.g. why do we have to write `function foo (x) { ... }` in JS when they could have made it `fun foo` or `fn foo`? One assumes for readability. 🙂
