Acting is great, music accompaniment is great. Facts and how things are portrayed isn’t accurate though, in numerous instances. Too bad……

So sad back then, the suffering must have been horrendous on both sides. To me,Booth got them all killed with his hatred,as well as himself.

I always cry when I hear about this case. Innocent but charged guilty because of her son. He got away only cause they got the blood they wanted in the moment. Clouded by revenge, Mary Surratt may I hope you rest in peace.

Who else is looking up these favorite films after they were mentioned? SKIN, The Fields, Whiplash, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, River - all great shorts or web series! What are the short films that you admire that have become something more?

Both John and Mary Surratt both died after the infamous assassin, John Wilkes Booth, was shot by the neck at the bar after the assassination of former president Abraham Lincoln at April 14th, 1865.

Gen. Lee surrendered in April, the war was not officially declared over for many months later. These who murdered the innocent for nothing more than doing their duty during a time of war, are themselves no less guilty. For though they themselves command men to fight and kill what are deemed to be the enemy, it is the commanders who hold the responsibility for the orders they give, and in time of war, no one is innocent. How ye judge is also how ye shall be judged. Marse

She was guilty.... 2 MUST read books" The Assassins Accomplice" by Kate Clifford Larson- she said her initial reason for writing the book was to exonerate Mary Surratt and show that her hanging was a travesty and unjust..UNTIL she got deep into her research and 2 /3rds of the way into her project changed her mind and decided to show she was in fact ,guilty... GREAT book By Kate L!! She rocks! the second book( and an INCREDIBLE book) " A True History Of the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln and of the Conspiracy of 1865" written by the man who lived in Mary Surratt's boarding house on H Street and was friends with her son John and became acquaintances of most of the conspirators( including Booth), LOUIS J WEICHMANN! - a Union Army Clerk and one of the prime government witnesses against Mary Surratt and the other conspirators- Weichmann was ridiculed and called a liar by many, many people back then who claimed he was making everything up to get himself off the hook BUT here's the big thing- he would not allow his book to be released until he died because he said he wanted everyone to know the REAL TRUTH and for people to see he had no reason to make up or hide anything because he would have nothing to gain from it- all of the evidence we have today shows everything he says is true- its another GREAT book and a must read for anyone who is fascinated with this story and trial... He was first investigated as a possible accomplice and didnt know why he was being interrogated until they finally told him Lincoln had been murdered. The police said his face went completely flush and he slowly stood up out of his chair and said" Oh my God, I see it all, I see it ALL now" He talks about it in his book, the moment all the previous conversations and activities clicked as to what had been going on.. He had rented and driven the carriage that he and Mrs Surratt took down to the tavern where she left the shooting irons for Booth... He was furious that they had left him wide open to affiliation and to possibly be charged with assisting in the assassination....its pretty amazing the way he( in some ways) brags on her being good and kind to him but yet, when he comes to realize what position she and the conspirators had put him in he passionately resents them and says they got exactly what they deserved....

It is hard to imagine Mary having zero knowledge of something being planned as she and John were involved with the Confederate cause previously for some time with deep loyalty. Planning an assassination, and carrying it out is on Booth. Planning a kidnapping to pull out some Confederate prisoners is believable and likely an early plan abandoned late and the Derringer option implemented. According to the law of the time, conspiring in a crime was punishable with the crime committed. No easy decision for the military to decide.

Whether you feel Mrs. Mary Suratt was guilty or not, she didn't get a fair trial of her peers. This was a stacked court by Vice President Andrew Johnson full of Union officers as the jury. Hardly a non-biased pool here. She didn't receive justice, for this reason.

I believe Mary Surratt was innocent of wrong doing. I think it was a simple matter of being at the wrong place and the wrong time. When you are running a business, such as a boarding house, you don't get to do a criminal background check on who's coming in. John Wilks Booth was an actor and knew precisely how to turn up the charm to look and sound like a model citizen. No, Mary Surratt was innocent.

It was INJUSTICE, period. She was not the plotter, and she did not pull the trigger, a long time has passed, all the accounts are hazy at the best. Perhaps Lincoln himself would have chosen to be her attorney.

I have to feel sorry for Mary. I’ve read a lot of the trial transcript and given the evidence I don’t doubt she knew of the plot to kidnap Lincoln and ransom him in return for the release of all confederate soldiers. It’s not unreasonable to assume that she may have even aided the kidnap plot but there’s very little beyond circumstantial evidence to support she participated in the assassination plot. She was railroaded by the union- possibly to flush out John from hiding given the press coverage.
