It's like a fast forward for the cart. Let's it re-cue quicker. It can be manually pressed or in this case a cue tone was recorded onto the cart at the end of the jingle sequence to get it to re-cue quickly. Nothing worse than carts that haven't been re-cued!!

Some carts where stereo, some radio stations played carts iso records, they recorded the music that must be played in a certain program on carts and the DJ received only the carts that has to be played in that program, also the records could not be damaged due maltreatment. Also a cart machine was able to start an other cart machine, some radio stations had sometimes 5 or more cart machines and the DJ loaded those cart machines with music and jingles and the only thing he has to do is the voice over and re-loading the cart machines with new carts.

The perception of reality recorded through vhs simply seems better than 4k in a way I cannot describe even though 4k is superior in terms of picture quality.

RIP the man I will always call Father Ted. I am reading a lovely memoir written by his children Don, Bob and Ben at the minute. Read about 5 or 6 Barry McGuigan books too. And Barney Eastwood's. RIP. All great people. (Editor: I should point out that Barry is alive and well and - totally of no relevance - his family home is a couple of mile from me). (Editor 2: You should note that as Ted - I know Dermott - died a while ago, unbelievably nearly 26 years ago, his children are now around the age he lived to. Editor 3: Don't tell Dougal this but Father Jack died on the same day as Ted, though I wouldn't blame him if he went into hiding on February 28th every year since, sometimes it can be a curse being Irish. (Editor 5, did you know Barry Devlin of eternal - no he's not dead - Horslips fame, got his first number one with this song?

Seemed like an almost clandestine way to get pop music in the early evenings - the local commercial stations often had specialist music shows, ranging from rock to soul to classical music, the BBC local radio stations put out Radio 2, even Radio 1 - the BBC’s flagship music station, broadcast Radio 2, Radios 3 and Four’s evening schedules rarely differed from those in the daytime - where could we hear decent pop music in the early evenings, short of dragging out the Dansette and playing the record collection of whichever sibling was able to get decent pop music - your parents only having Jim Reeves and Perry Como and the most up-to-date music they had was something like Elvis Presley or Tommy Steele in an era where the latest hits were by the likes of The Osmonds, David Cassidy, David Bowie, David Essex, Slade and Sweet? Why, Radio Luxembourg, of course - didn’t help when the only radio the house boasted was in the control of parents who thought the BBC local radio station was the only station that existed on the planet, with all that fuddy-duddy music (when it did play music), not even in stereo, despite being on FM, the only time they did play up-to-date music was on request shows or when they relayed the Top 20 rundown on a Sunday evening - it was on both Radios 1 and 2, so you could pick it up on local radio as well - most of the daytime schedules were little more than regional versions of Woman’s Hour, only with fuddy-duddy music that they only played to allow the programme to get one guest out and another one in without making too much noise doing so or setting up landline links to “our Plymouth studio!”. Since when did Radio Cleveland have a studio in Plymouth? They really meant BBC Radio Devon! Or “our (place miles away) studio” - no - BBC Radio (insert other station’s name here) - although the local commercial stations did play the latest hits and were the only place (when they finally came on the air) where, if you had a decent stereo system and listened on FM - or, as it was called then, VHF - where you could hear all the latest hits (and occasional oldies - there’s only a finite amount of Top 40 material you can play - singles and album tracks) the way they are meant to be heard - in stereo! Even Radio 1 was largely restricted to medium wave, which doesn’t do justice to any kind of music, old, new or specialist - when Radio 3 was moved to the original frequency of BBC Radio 1, which, up until this year (2023) was the home of Absolute Radio, classical music sounded like it was being played through a washing machine - luckily, better reception could have been obtained by tuning to FM - with the addition of stereo! Ever since Radio 1 stopped broadcasting on medium wave and even Absolute Radio, most BBC local radio stations and now, having become a local version of Greatest Hits Radio, the medium wave frequencies of many of the local stations which began in the 70s have been closed down permanently, what are those people that, for their own personal reasons, preferred the sound of medium wave to FM going to do now that their radios no longer work - especially if it only had medium wave on it? Even if it did have FM and it was a stereo radio? They would have to start getting used to listening to radio that sounds like they’re in the studio with them and not like Dial-A-Disc!

I feel that if you've ever spent an age at a wedding or an awards ceremony listening to someone thanking everyone down to their caterer's cousin's dog, that this song will resonate with you, even if you've never heard Barry McGuigan, Ronald Reagan, Bob Geldof, or Pope John Paul II open their mouths. The line "Don't thank Him, Your Holiness, thank Mr Eastwood!" is brilliant anyway.

In terms of resolution, VHS was 225p, Beta Max was 330p, Laser Disc was 425p but had lossless audio, unlike DVD. And DVD actually started at 420p but moved to 480. That's about all I know.

Independent broadcaster - Absolute Radio do a small goodbye programme based on the history of 1215KHz including bits from the BBC Light Programme and Radio 1. State owned broadcaster RTE - nothing, just go direct to a loop telling everybody to retune. Make no wonder nobody is listening to the service anymore. I suppose when 198 KHz goes they will just turn off the transmitter without any comments.

RTE made a big deal of their MW closure in 2008 and ran a farewell programme as they had been broadcasting on MW since the 1920s. They were only on LW since 2004 so it didn't really have the same historical significance.

I have not recognized this, although I am a daily listener of 252 kHz. I enjoy the music shows during evening and at night. this is a real big loss and by that, longwave loses all of its interest to me. very very sad to read about this. In fact, I am listening right now. I have been following the Biden visit live coverage throughout the day.
