I have to wonder who would win between Chen and Malinin. And please don't tell me I don't know anything about skating, because my son has been a competitive figure skater for quite awhile.

My granddaughter was a competitive figure skater and I can say Ilia is a superb skater…the best I have seen in decades. Those quads are so high and strong and he has developed his artistry as well. Learning to jump like that is HARD PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL WORK! I remember when my granddaughter landed her first double axle, which was quite a feat many, many years ago. Look at the skaters now! Wow!

Some of the comments here make me a bit sad. In a world with so many people fighting, and with tensions between two governments, there don't need to be tensions between the people of those countries. Here in the U.S., we love that Ilia appreciates his Russian roots while also being a typical American young man. Like many children of immigrants here, he can understand his parents' language even though he can't speak it well. He says he doesn't feel a strong connection to Russia because he has never visited, but he appreciates Russian culture and people. That's wonderful and we should all like that. At least on this side of the ocean, we're all happy to honor his Russian connection while also honoring his American identity. 90 million Americans have an immigrant parent (including me), so he is certainly not unusual, and we are used to celebrating different backgrounds like his. Most importantly, let us celebrate him as an incredible skater who is kind enough to share his gift with us! Everyone should be proud when watching him -- not because of the country he represents, but because he is a fellow human being doing amazing things.

Just a bunch of jumps. I watched Brian Boitano. Paul Wylie, Scott Hamilton , and Dorothy Hamell and one doesn't need to be a jumping flea to win Gold.

I don't know how anyone could watch this and think it was just a bunch of jumps. He has wonderfully improved his artistry and really tells a story now. The change from where he was at the junior level to where he is now, both with artistry and technique, is remarkable. It's very much like what happened with Nathan Chen. By the time he gets to the 2026 Olympics, we won't even remember his poor artistry at the junior level. He's no Jason Brown, but he's doing very well now!
