I like how you mentioned that Romans preferred heavier stones as anti-armor. While a stone 1/4 the mass and traveling twice as fast as a heavier stone will have similar kinetic energy, that energy is dependent on a direct hit (nice direct hit on that face, err melon). Any deflection can result in the projectile glancing off and keeping some of its kinetic energy as it continues to travel. Your practical experiments have been fantastic, thanks!

The stone cast at 3:43 hit the target in the groin! He shot it right into the targets balls! I'm pretty sure that any armor of the period wouldn't have helped much either.

during my back then obligatory military service a guy from Málaga tought me and other friends how to make and use a sling. I instantly loved it. I learn by myself you can use any strap or belt between 3-5cm wide, not as accurate but works

I suspect that using a sling is not as easy as it looks and a long learning curve is involved......wonder how well it would work against modern composite helmets?...poorly I suspect..

A variable that is hard to illustrate in this type of test is that the watermelon "head" is not attached to a neck, so it is free to roll out of the way as energy is transferred. A projectile hitting a human carries injury potential beyond the damage done to the armour and to a lot more critical human anatomy as energy is transferred into the neck and spine. Of course, if you just took that rock in the teeth you wont be caring much but the dents in the helmet can only tell part of the story.
