As a 70s/80s kid, I developed a tremendous fondness for Al. He didn’t mention much about his editing, but as an editor for both DC (pre-implosion) and Marvel, he managed to introduce me to some of the best artists I’ve ever seen. I really loved the editorial runs he had on Bill Mantlo, Sal Buscema, Michael Golden, and Steve Ditko’s runs on Micronauts, Hulk, and Rom. Some of my favorite early comics memories. I also loved Marvel Fanfare. Like Stan Lee and Archie Goodwin, Al cultivated a really fun relationship with his readers through his engaging “editorial-Al” persona and cartooning. His Avengers run with “Sterno” was one of my all-time favorites. His work with Starlin was legendary. And, like Ron Frenz, he maintained an artistic continuity with the early days of Kirby, Ditko, and Ayers. I can’t say enough good about the guy. Thanks to Al and all involved in this interview!

Oh man!!! I remember this series from when I was a little kid. I really enjoyed it, so thank you two for covering it! One of my favorite lines comes at the end of this series when (Spoiler Alert) Cap is fighting Crossbones with a knife. Crossbones: "it slices, it dices", to which Cap promptly kicks the knife out of Crossbone's hand AND kicks him in the head, and THEN says to Crossbones "it flies out of your hand". For some reason, a THIRD of a CENTURY (34 years) later, I STILL remember this with great fondness. Well done!

Great interview! I'm becoming a bigger Bryan Hitch fan for sure. I really like all of the Ghost Machine books, especially Geiger. I purchased Redcoat # 1 and I am anxiously waiting to see how the series goes. I really love how Captain America in the Ultimates was patterned off of that Cap appearance in the Daredevil Born Again storyline. I find that really interesting. I don't have many Daredevil books, but I did buy that one issue Bryan referenced because I remember reading it when I was a kid. Cap appearing out of nowhere with the Avengers, controlling the situation and commanding Thor to make it rain to put the fires out. Love those two pages. I thought it was really bad ass!

Need to comment on your assessment on page two panel one. I think Jack was not having the second assailant shooting at cap, because no mussel flash, as he has purposely has added to every other weapons discard. So I believe it was a inker and colorist interpretation. Which was incorrect on jacks intention. So not a demerit towards Jack.
