i'm not as versed in jazz or jazz theory, so i'm asking this as someone with an almost purely western classical background out of simple curiosity: what is the purpose of writing this transcription in 4/4 with implied swing if you have to write in so many triplets and other compound meter tuplets? would it not be more legible and simpler to write in 12/8?

In general swing is a bit straighter than triplets (between 8th notes and triplets).

swing is more flexible to the player, and not always a direct 2:1 between the notes; writing this in 12/8 triplets would imply precision and exactness

Swung Blues can be in 12/8 too, but unless the whole thing’s in triplets, 4/4 is easier to read, e.g. compared to a dozen quarter-eighth beats. Swing exists in the Classical record as French notes inégales too.
