This was 1988

I lived nearby in 4th Ward when they dropped this hotel. My boyfriend and I stood by and watched. The huge dustcloud rolled down the streets and overtook us. We covered our faces with our shirts and ran, but there was no escaping it. We were covered in ash, choking and unable to see for a couple of minutes. Looking back on it, I am convinced it did terrible things to our lungs. Asbestos, bird poop, fungus - who knows. We inhaled it all. If I die of lung cancer...... It was a pretty building with great history. 4 presidents, Elvis and Joan Crawford stayed there. Charlotte has changed so much since then. By the way, many of my neighbors in 4th Ward died of cancer in their 40s, 50s and 60s. I always wondered if there was any environmental connection.
