It's quite clear the greek is the one who started the schism , the pope was always trying to please them bitching around; the acceptance of filioque was pure hell , the pope knew the greeks would seethe with it so he just accepted it later, thankfully the athanasian creed (Quicumque Vult) and the fathers can vindicate such anti-arian addition.

Shouldn't the thumbnail say '1 John'? 'John 1' would usually refer to the first chapter of John's Gospel?

Not saying its not required but does that mean the theif on the cross is in hell? He didn't get baptized?
@Alfred33AD6 ай бұрын
The penitent thief was promised to enter the limbo of the fathers which is why Our Lord uses the term "paradise". Study the roots of that word in the context used in that passage and also patristic witness. No one entered heaven prior to the harrowing of hell when the patriarchs were released from limbo and joined among the elect.

So doesn’t this refute that he believed in eternal procession from the father and the son
@Alfred33AD8 ай бұрын
No, per filium as Maximus understands it is synonymous with the Latin understanding of filioque as Florence teaches it.
@Imitatinghim8 ай бұрын
@@Alfred33AD the council of Florence, taught that the spirit proceeds from the father and son eternally, and that the spirits nature eternally comes from the father and the son. Saint Maximus the confessor in this quote, is explaining that the Latins are not heretics because they are not saying that the spirit eternally proceeds from the son, They’re only saying that he proceeds through the son from the father. Which we orthodox are perfectly okay with saying that the spirit is through the son in the sense that Christ delivered through him the spirit, which proceeds from the hypostasis of the father alone. saying that the spirit proceeds from the son does not always mean the same thing that modern Catholics say it does. As an orthodox, I can say that the spirit proceeds from the father and the son, but I will not say that the spirit proceeds eternally from the son and from the nature of the son, that’s latter is what we view as heretical
@Alfred33AD8 ай бұрын
@@Imitatinghim You're making a category error. We do not say the Spirit proceeds from the "nature" of the Son but from the person of the Son. To say that the Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son (filioque) or to say that the Spirit proceeds through the Son (per filium) is actually a synonymous definition. They mean the exact same thing but are expressions resulting from the linguistic patrimony of their respective rites. The Eastern "Orthodox" believe that the Son does not proceed through or from the Son as the later proposition was condemned at the Council of Blachernae. Modern Eastern "Orthodox" theology understands this procession as one of temporal mission or eternal manifestation. In summation, as a Catholic one can believe in procession from the Father and the Son or from the Father through the Son (which are synonymous). As an Eastern "Orthodox" one cannot believe that the Spirit's hypostatic origin resides in the singular spiration proceeding forth from the Father and the Son (filioque) or from the Father through the Son (per filium). Maximus holds to the per filium position and is explaining in this quote that the Latins who hold to the filioque position are not in error because the two positions speak of the same essential reality.
