Amid the morning's despair over genocide and our faltering democracy, this lovely man popped up in my youtube feed. Never heard of him or the Haystacks, but after work will need to explore...

The route we plotted earlier? What route? . He did not sit with a map and work out where he was going and then when out walking use the etrex to confirm he was on the right track. That is plotting a route. He seemed to download something from a computer but what was it? What can I get from etrex that I cannot get from the OS (GPS) app on my mobile phone?

I’ve had two pairs of brasher goretex boots, back in 2000 and again in 2006 and they are the dogs jewels. Wish I never let my brother used them. Romped absolute miles in them I did.

Its not the goretex making them waterproof - that will be the high quality leather! Not like all goretex lined non leather boots which last a year waterproof if you're lucky.

i think you rushed throught the important part of taking a bearing so it was diffcult to follow. Also adding the degrees on was rushed and not explained well
@reverendsaltine6852
@reverendsaltine6852 5 жыл бұрын
I think, To “take a bearing,” you would have to set the map down on a flat surface with the compass on top of it aligned with straight lines on the map, pointing “North.” Rotate the map until the red arrow (North) appears to be “in the shed.” Lift the compass without changing the map orientation. Holding the direction of travel arrow in the direction you want to travel, set the compass down in such a way that you can use an edge to make a straight line between where you are and where you want to go. Turn the bezel so that the north needle is again “in the shed.” The direction of travel arrow will reveal your bearing or direction to travel. Be sure not to do this backwards. The direction of travel arrow must point in the general direction you want to walk-between the two points, starting from where you are to where you want to go.

@@reverendsaltine6852 He's using his compass as a protractor, baseplate compasses are build to do this by design. (Silva 1 2 3 method) You propose the magnetic bearing on the map method, that's fine if you have no protractor at all and are ready to take your time.
@josephbrotherton7578
@josephbrotherton7578 7 жыл бұрын
If the magnetic variation is 2 degrees as you say, does that mean you subtract the number. So Say you had 42 degrees, you'd make that 40 degrees (one nudge as you say).
@4Qish
@4Qish 6 жыл бұрын
no, its the opposite... because you are taking a grid bearing (on the map) and turning it into a magnectic bearing (on your compass) you add the difference... always remember: Grid to mag add, mag to grid get rid.
@2adamast
@2adamast 6 жыл бұрын
In the uk it’s a declination West, -2 degrees as bearing, so it’s adding up if your compass can’t be set for magnetic declination.
