Gallagher and Shean apparently made a talking film for DeForest Phonofilm in 1922-23. It was apparently lost.

Unfortunately, as I discussed in the documentary, the Theodore Case sound movie did not star the actual Gallagher and Shean. I could find no record of them having performed in front of Deforest for his Phonofilms. I would love to be proved wrong on this, so please send me any information you have, and I will check it out and update with an addendum if necessary. Thanks Dan

@@ShadowsOnTheScreen when I visited the Theodore Case museum in Auburn NY, I discussed the existence of a Gallagher and Shean film made in 1924. Perhaps the film was exclusively made by Case in his Auburn studio?
@ShadowsOnTheScreen
@ShadowsOnTheScreen Ай бұрын
It certainly is a possibility! However, I could find no reference to the team making a movie in 1924, and just about their every move was tracked in the trade journals. But, with the destruction of so many of Cases’s movies in the 1950s, we may never know. One thing is for sure though, the existing movie is not that of Ed Gallagher and Al Shean. Maybe Shean with someone else, but that would be about it.

And one more thing … :) the costume that Shean wore was so interesting. It was a man’s suit coat with a hooped skirt bow! Am I wrong? I’m sure it was to create a look for the worst seats in the audience to bring it out visionary appeal. Very creative

It was interesting learning the working distinction between Vaudeville, Burlesque and Legitimate Theater. I love how the old “chestnuts” were re-used. And all the black face! How much of a staple it was. Of course, this goes back to black face in the 19th century, when the minstrel banjo and later banjo styles was the most popular instrument during that whole century.

Yeah, me again. I was watching other PhonuVues here on YT, and a few look like they might have the man playing the sailor from this video. One is titled Sweet Shoppe Hamburger Hop, a tall guy with green jacket and cook's hat has the same over the top act and big toothy grin. Profile looks a lot like him IMO, but the sailor video is in such bad shape...
