She was a multi talented actress but to us southerners british born vivien leigh is forever immortalized in her portrayal of two southern belles- scarlett o’hara and blanche dubois

I've always wondered how her illness affected these performances. It's tempting to think that her acting was enhanced by her insight into the dark regions of life. All actors are a little eccentric to a degree. My favorite is Waterloo Bridge.

I watched this first when I was around 16. I didn't get a proper analysis on Blanche's condition all the years but now I think I can make assumptions. First off, Blanche suffers from chronic anxiety and is OCD. Apart from this, she is mentally healthy. Bipolar claims are bogus. Of course, living in her delusions eventually leads to her breakdown when she could've pragmatic. Mitch's insult caused her first breakdown but she was still in her senses. Stanley's rape was the ultimate nail on the coffin and the trauma caused her to regress further into her delusions. Yet, she seems to be in her senses. She is wary of Stanley and Mitch in the final scene. Her delusions are strong yet, she is shocked to see the doctor which again implies that she still some of her senses with her. What follows is not a mental breakdown, it's a nervous breakdown. It's wonderfully portrayed in this film version (the original had her grab the paper lantern with a screech). The direction and acting is impeccable. By the flow of the story, I think what Tennessee Williams really needed was this version instead. Blanche is having an ultimate breakdown. Then she is led away by the doctor after he wins her trust. By the way the story goes, I am certain against what most people think in the contrary, that Blanche won't be committed to a lifelong stint at the mental institution rather, it will be a temporary spell following the much needed counselling (which she wouldn't have received else where) and treatment, she'd be well and return home. She seemed open to ideas so probably, she could get rid of her antebellum delusions and pursue art, poetry and literature like she talked about. I know treatment those days were harsh but as pointed out, she never had a proper mental illness to begin with. There was just a lot of trauma in her life which she had to heal from.

I read this & saw this in college & it went right over my head. It's a shame that wisdom doesn't come along until it's too late to matter.
@snickle19802 жыл бұрын
If wisdom came _that much earlier,_ would you be able to _enjoy_ your youth, or would such early wisdom turn you into a young curmudgeon? A bitter youth? I have to imagine these things like maturation progress as they do for a reason. Even if that reason is only biological or evolutionary in nature. 😁

the definite best part that no one can get correct is that she doesn't have the strongest southern accent. Back in the day it was the English tongue mixed with the new reminiscents of american talk. this was the accent that we had!
@youisastar32462 жыл бұрын
What about the other actors? They don't even sound southern except for the actress playing the minor character Eunice.

Same 😢 I watched in my 20s and found her irritating but now it’s just heartbreaking. I paid closer attention this time around. It was really hard to digest this one. Too much like home life. Blanche def deserved better… even if she was lying to her sister. She just wanted to be loved and make her world pretty again.
