An epic song of a working class mans effort to make a mark, a shining example of endeavour no matter what your background.

Renewed interest in this song since Luke Coombs covered it and played it with the songwriter, Tracy Chapman, last night at the Grammy Awards.

I’ve had the supreme pleasure of seeing Garnet play twice. The first time was just after this album (Small Victories) was released, at Iron Horse Music Hall in Northampton, MA. Stunning ballads. I know every word. ❤️

It’s so wonderful to hear you again, Connie. You were a big part of my late teens and University of Alberta days. Your passion and humour haven’t diminished. I looked you up tonight because a friend in my ukulele group, who was from Saskatchewan mentioned she’s on a Saskatchewan music kick, and decided to challenge herself to learn “Wood River.” I will definitely share your concert with her. Thank you for the music🎶🎶❤️

As I have said in the comments for another performance, this is one of the greatest folk songs of all time, and he should be remembered and famed far beyond the fame he has had.

I've been lucky enough to see this man four times in concert, all in the 90s. His music is unparalleled, and this is one of my favourite songs that he does.

Do you also know his brother, Stan’s work? They’re both the sounds of my childhood. Haunting ballads, roaring sea shanties… the most beautiful baritones and harmonies. Garnet’s stories that he shared between songs made Stan come to life for me. ❤️

He left us too soon... A man who would rather be fly fishing but he was bless/cursed with clear vision and a way with words with a sound on the wind tonight! May your spirit find restful people to share some time with "UP IN HEAVEN"

I was there that night. Before Bob had finished his instrumental introduction the audience was singing the song. I will never forget that moment; It remains one of perhaps the most most moving experiences in a long history with the me and thee.

Glad to run across this. Saw this year's (2020) Xmas streaming by Eliza and - discovered a new loved songster and songwriter. Good guitarist accompaniment in this version, too. Will continue to enjoy future anythings.

I love this song... I had hard love in my family or origin too, though it was nt about liquor or poverty. my mother died last month at age 91 and it was so often hard love between us. "from Christmas to my birthday" is abut as close to a "million years" as you can get . my birthday is the day before Christmas - I celebrated it yesterday, pretty much by myself due to COVID and hoped that my one child, who is now an adult, would call me. we have always been loose but some things happened in the last year and we went 8 or 9 months without contact... not my choosing, while my mother was so ill. I brought my mother some Christmas greenery last yer, when she survived a grueling emergency surgery - and she said se=he felt bad that 'I couldn't do anything for your birthday!" I told her it was fine, "I still have my mother - : there is some gentle irony to the way she had a little Christmas tree in her room when I was a day old that my father brought her... that except qhen my younger brother was born, she never spent another night in a hospital as a patient until she was 90... and that I brought her one ore tree for her room for our last Christmas together.
